Burnley booked their place in the fourth round of the Emirates FA Cup with an emphatic 5-1 victory over Millwall on Saturday afternoon.

Ashley Barnes’ brace was accompanied by strikes from Loum Tchaouna, Jaidon Anthony, and Jaydon Banel on a cold but productive day at Turf Moor.

Scott Parker made eight changes to the team that started Wednesday night’s Premier League draw against Manchester United, with Max Weiß making his third appearance of the season in goal.

Maxime Estéve was joined by Quilindschy Hartman, Hjalmar Ekdal and Oliver Sonne in defence, while Barnes made his first start of the campaign in attack.

It didn’t take long for the veteran striker to open the scoring. After good work from Anthony found Jacob Bruun Larsen, the Dane squared for Barnes to tap in from six yards in the 11th minute.

Weiß did well to deny Millwall captain Jake Cooper twice from set piece situations, with the first save being particularly strong high to his left.

Those interventions proved key as the Clarets took control of the tie with two more strikes before half-time.

After Tchaouna wrong-footed Steven Benda from the edge of the area, Bruun Larsen’s second assist of the day gave Anthony the chance to fire confidently into the bottom right corner.

Burnley’s attacking intent continued into the second half, with Bruun Larsen working Benda and Tchaouna smacking the left-hand post within 15 minutes after the restart.

Their endeavour eventually paid off with a fourth goal soon after the hour, when a defensive error allowed Barnes to sweep home from eight yards.

Parker’s first changes of the afternoon then saw Josh Laurent and Lesley Ugochukwu make way for Hannibal and Florentino respectively.

Barnes looked hungry for his first Clarets hat-trick and his eyes lit up after great foot work from Anthony on the left, but his effort was blocked by a Millwall defender.

Banel replaced Bruun Larsen with 12 minutes of regular time remaining and was able to net his first Burnley goal before the clock hit 90, and it was another close-range finish.

Unfortunately the clean sheet wasn’t to be as Josh Coburn lifted the ball over the onrushing Weiß in stoppage-time, but the Clarets recorded a comfortable victory nevertheless.
