Burnley fell to a 3-1 defeat at Turf Moor on Sunday afternoon in an end-to-end encounter with Aston Villa in the second fixture of the 2023/24 campaign.
A Matty Cash brace in the first half gave Villa the lead at the break in east Lancashire, before Lyle Foster struck his first goal in the top-flight a minute into the second half. Moussa Diaby then grabbed the third on the hour to seal the victory for the visitors.
Manager Vincent Kompany made two changes from the side that lost to Manchester City on the opening night of the season.
This week’s signing Hannes Delcroix replaced the absent Jordan Beyer and Manuel Benson came in for Vitinho in the starting XI.
First Half
The Clarets began brightly and forced an early corner when Foster broke down the left and saw his teasing cross into the area turned behind by Konsa.
However, it was the visitors who did take the lead with just eight minutes on the clock when Watkins raced into the area and lifted the ball over Trafford to the back-post for Cash to turn home from close range.

Burnley looked for a response shortly after as Benson cut back onto his wonderful left foot on the edge of the area, only for the Belgian’s dangerous ball to sail wide for a goal-kick.
Despite the Clarets’ efforts at clawing an equaliser, Unai Emery’s men doubled the lead just before the midway point of the first half when Diaby picked out Cash inside the area to slam home his and Villa’s second of the afternoon.
Villa then had a chance to add a third goal on the half-hour-mark but Delcroix’s perfectly timed interception denied Diaby breaking into the area with only Trafford left to beat in the Burnley defence.
The lively Cash and Diaby then combined once again with the latter aiming for Watkins inside the box, but the in-form striker couldn’t quite connect and missed the opportunity to steer home a third.
Before the break Amdouni came close to pulling a goal back after the Swiss international danced through a pair of oncoming Villa players before rifling an effort just over the cross bar from 25-yards out.

Second Half
The Clarets started the second half on the front foot and got off to a dream start when Roberts’ cross into the area was met by the head of half-time substitute Gudmundsson, which fell kindly into the path of Foster to swivel and fire home past Olsen with just a minute played to half the deficit.
The home side were enjoying plenty of possession in search of an equalising goal and just before the hour mark debutant Delcroix came inches close to heading home the second only for Olsen to palm away the Belgian’s powerful header from a corner.
That save proved to be key, as just two minutes later Villa snatched a third and doubled their advantage once again as Digne picked out Diaby on the edge of the area to guide into the bottom corner in front of the Villa supporters.
Emery's side had the chance to score a fourth with 15 minutes left as Zaniolo's solo run earned a corner thanks to a last ditch block from Al-Dakhil to deny a shot towards goal.
