Burnley FC Women bowed out of the FA Women’s National League Cup in the Determining Round as they fell to a 3-2 defeat in extra-time against Newcastle United.
Bridget Galloway netted the opener for the Magpies from the penalty spot before Millie Ravening equalised just after the break.
The game then went to extra-time, with Newcastle striking first as Galloway bagged her brace and Leah Embley scoring Burnley’s second equaliser of the game.
Becky Ferguson slotted home the winner two minutes from time to send the Magpies through and the Clarets into the FA Women’s National League Plate.
There was one change from the Clarets win over Liverpool Feds last Sunday – 20th August – as Georgia Marshall dropped out and Lara Miller came into the side.
First Half
The hosts started the game well and were in front within the first 15 minutes, as Miller was adjudged to have brought down Kacie Elson and Galloway slotted in from the spot.
That action would prove the last of Miller’s game, as she was stretchered off through injury and replaced by Danielle Deehan.
Half chances followed for the Clarets, who were looking to find their way back into the game with Ravening driving towards goal and seeing a strike deflected wide, and Embley curling a shot from the resulting corner straight at Grace Donnelly in the Magpies goal.
Aimee Kelly then had two opportunities to level the score before the break, firstly breaking in behind the Newcastle backline, only to be denied by Donnelly and secondly heading over from close range on the brink of half-time.
Second Half
The Clarets made an extremely quick start to the second half, and were level within the first minute as smart play from Kelly found Embley, who in turn dinked the ball towards the back post, where an onrushing Ravening was there to head into the back of the net.
Rebecca Sawiuk’s side were growing into the game by the minute, and Rhema Lord-Mears almost put them in front when she made space for a shot and put the ball past Donnelly but not past the hosts defender on the line.
Georgia Gibson had the last real effort of the 90, shooting from distance and seeing her effort comfortably held by Kirstie Levell in the Clarets goal.
Extra Time
The hosts put themselves back in front just three minutes into the alloted extra 30, as Galloway shrugged off a challenge from a Burnley defender, before rolling the ball past Levell into the bottom corner.
The Clarets tried to find a way back into the game and had three chances in quick succession when Ravening acrobatically volleyed wide, Paul shot over from distance, and substitute Bella Reidford’s strike was held by Donnelly.
Embley was then inches away from levelling for Burnley but her touch at the back post wasn’t enough to beat Donnelly, who saved expertly with her feet as Sawiuk’s team went into the break behind.
In the 107th minute of play however, Embley would find the net with a brilliantly curled effort into the far corner past the outstretched hand of the Magpies stopper to equalise for the Clarets.
Substitute Amaya Coleman-Evans had two one-on-one chances to put Burnley in front, but both efforts were kept out by Donnelly, before Newcastle went up the other end and won the game through Becky Ferguson, as she slotted past Levell.
The Clarets will now compete in the FA Women’s National League Plate, with the Magpies progressing to the Cup.
Burnley FC Women are back in action next Sunday – 3rd September – when they face Wolves in their home opener for the campaign at the Lancashire FA County Ground in Leyland.
