Nicky Hayen got off to a winning start in his first competitive match in charge, as Burnley booked their place in the Carabao Cup second round following a penalty shoot-out victory over Notts County.

Goalkeeper Max Weiss proved to be the hero in the shoot-out, as the German stopper saved two spot-kicks, with Zian Flemming, Zeki Amdouni, Mike Tresor and Kyle Walker all finding the net to secure the win.

Callum Roberts gave County the lead just before half-time, before Flemming then levelled things up two minutes into the second-half with a smart finish.

With nothing to separate the two sides at the full-time whistle, the Clarets went on to win in the shoot-out.

Burnley started bright and controlled the opening 15 minutes, with the visitors unable to get any real foot on the ball.

However, County did enjoy a brief spell of possession of their own midway through the first-half, with Martin Paterson’s side winning a corner, which was cleared away by a crashing Joe Worrall header.

The Clarets then carved open the first effort on target of the game just past the half-hour mark, as Jacob Bruun Larsen latched onto a Hannibal pass over the County defence, but Magpies keeper James Belshaw pulled off a smart save to deny the winger’s fierce half-volley from inside the area.

Despite Burnley dominating plenty of the ball and looking to unlock the Notts defence, it was the away side who took the lead just a few minutes before half-time.

Nick Tsaroulla won the ball on the edge of the area, before teeing up Roberts, who turned and unleashed a strike into the bottom corner to give County the lead.

There was time for a late Zian Flemming effort on goal in stoppage time, but Belshaw did well to get down low and keep the Dutchman’s shot out and ensure the visitors went into the break with the advantage.

However, it didn’t take the Clarets long to draw the scores level, as Hayen’s men were back level just two minutes into the second-half.

Marcus Edwards played a neat through ball into the path of Flemming, who charged into the area and dinked it over Belshaw.

Edwards then came close to getting his own name on the scoresheet, but the winger’s curling free-kick from the right of the area was pushed over for a corner by the hands of Belshaw.

As the game passed the hour mark, Hayen turned to his bench to make a triple change, with Connor Roberts, Zeki Amdouni and Josh Laurent replacing Ugo Rahouber, Aaron Ramsey and Oliver Sonne.

With just 10 minutes left on the clock and the tie approaching a penalty shoot-out, the Clarets boss made one final roll of the dice, as Mike Tresor came on for Edwards.

However, it was County who came close to regaining the lead moments after that change, as Maz Kouyhar was played through towards goal, but could only steer his effort narrowly wide of the post.

There was nothing to separate the two sides at the full-time whistle, which resulted in the Clarets going on to book their place in round two with the shoot-out win.
