Honours ended even at Turf Moor, as a late Cristian Romero equaliser broke Clarets hearts on Saturday afternoon.

The Spurs skipper headed home an unstoppable equaliser in the final seconds of the second half, to pull Spurs level, after Lyle Foster came off the bench to put Burnley ahead 14 minutes from time.

Earlier, Micky van de Ven's 38th minute piledriver from 12 yards out gave Spurs a 1-0 lead shortly before half-time, but Burnley weren't behind for long, with Axel Tuanzebe scoring his first goal for the Clarets with a fine close-range volley from Kyle Walker's inch-perfect centre.

The Clarets dominated for long spells in the second half, but Scott Parker's side were left pondering what might have been, when Romero struck to ensure it finished all square at Turf Moor.

Parker named an unchanged side for the visit of the North Londoners, sticking with the same starting XI that earned a deserved share of the spoils at Anfield - the home of reigning Premier League champions Liverpool - seven days ago.

There was an early scare for the Clarets inside the opening seconds, as Spence snuck in behind Walker, before pulling it back for Dom Solanke, but the forward couldn’t quite connect and it was quickly cleared to safety.

Burnley responded to that early chance with one of their own and it found the back of the net, only to be flagged for offside.

Marcus Edwards dinked a lovely ball into the area, which Armando Broja flicked on to the back-post for Lucas Pires, who turned it home from close-range, only for a flag to be raised for a clear offside.

In a fairly even opening, Spurs then came close to curling home the opener midway through the first-half, but Pedro Porro’s stinging free-kick could only ripple the side-netting.

The Spanish defender then had another opportunity from a similar range just a few minutes later, however Martin Dúbravka was there to comfortably palm his goal-bound strike wide of the post.

The Burnley No.1 was called into action once again 10 minutes later, at full stretch to keep out former Claret Wilson Odobert’s curling effort.

From the following corner, Dúbravka then had to play his part once again, this time keeping out Odobert’s drive, before denying Conor Gallagher’s close-range strike with a superb stop.

However, the deadlock was broken moments later, after the ball fell kindly to Van de Ven and the towering defender made no mistake with a first-time finish into the bottom corner to give Spurs the lead.

With half-time fast approaching, Burnley bagged their equaliser at a perfect time, as Walker’s pin-point delivery was met by Tuanzebe inside the area, with the defender sliding it home with a cool finish past Vicario to ensure the scores were level at the break.

Burnley started brightly and carved open an early second-half chance, as Jaidon Anthony slipped in a great ball for Broja, but the forward’s effort towards goal was blocked well by the oncoming Van de Ven.

With the game passing the hour mark, Spurs then opened up their first real opportunity of the second 45, but Spence’s fizzing strike was kept out by the palms of Dúbravka.

Parker then turned to his bench for the first time of the afternoon, with Foster and Josh Laurent replacing Broja and Florentino.

The Clarets were enjoying a spell of prolonged pressure and it paid off when Anthony teed up Foster, who saw his initial effort blocked, before firing home at the second attempt underneath the body of Vicario.

Dúbravka, who was outstanding all afternoon, was powerless to prevent Spurs having the final say in the 90th minute, when Romero headed home to ensure it finished 2-2 at the end of a pulsating encounter.
