Clarets defeated late on at the Gtech

Two late goals won it for Brentford in a narrow contest at the Gtech Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Igor Thiago’s brace and a Dango Ouattara strike handed the Bees a 3-1 victory, with Zian Flemming bagging his fourth of the campaign from the spot.

In an otherwise drab affair, all the drama was saved until the final ten minutes, with Thiago putting the hosts in front from the spot on 81 minutes, before Zian Flemming drew the visitors level with a penalty of his own soon after.

Thiago then regained Brentford's lead four minutes from time, before Ouattara clinched it for the hosts in stoppage time to break Burnley hearts.

Scott Parker made two changes to his starting XI for the clash at the Gtech, with Hannibal and Lyle Foster both returning, at the expense of Lesley Ugochukwu and Jaidon Anthony.

Brentford enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges, with the long throw threat of Michael Kayode testing the Clarets’ defensive unit early on, but Parker’s side were equal to it.

Brentford were by no means orchestrating proceedings though, with Burnley playing their way into the contest as the half approached the quarter hour mark.

The Clarets had strong appeals for a penalty turned away on 16 minutes, when Hannibal seized upon a loose ball and went to ground inside the box, but referee Sam Barratt was perfectly positioned to wave away the appeals for a foul, booking the Tunisian for simulation.

The Bees created a couple of half-chances of their own soon after, with Igor Thiago a constant threat for the hosts – but as the clocked ticked towards 30 minutes, it was an even contest.

At the other end, Axel Tuanzebe’s close range shot was blocked by Caoimhin Kelleher, before Zian Flemming’s dipping left-footed strike from distance brought the best out of the Irish stopper.

That proved to be the last chance of note in the half, as the two sides headed in goalless.

The start of the second half followed a similar pattern to that of the first, with Brentford coming out of the traps quickest – Aaron Hickey firing high and wide from close range in the 47th minute, before Thiago had an effort ruled out for offside soon after.

The Bees were rampant, going close again in the 53rd minute, when Dango Ouattara headed narrowly wide from the edge of the six-yard box.

Parker made his first substitution of the afternoon on the hour mark, with Ugochukwu replacing Hannibal. That change appeared to steady the ship, with the visitors gaining a foothold in the game.

With less than 20 minutes to go, both sides went to their bench, Parker introducing Josh Laurent, Jaidon Anthony and Jacob Bruun Larsen.

Brentford were awarded a spot-kick moments later, referee Barratt adjudging Tuanzebe to have tripped Ouattara, with a lengthy VAR check confirming the decision.

Up stepped Thiago, who buried the resultant spot-kick, to leave Parker’s side with a mountain to climb late on.

Three minutes later, Burnley were awarded a spot-kick of their own, substitute Josh Laurent brought down inside the box – and Flemming made no mistake from 12-yards, sending Kelleher the wrong way.

But joy soon turned to despair for Parker’s side, when Thiago latched on to a loose ball inside the box and buried an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net.

It was harsh on Parker’s side, and then – with nine minutes of added time shown on the board – Ouattara slotted home to leave Burnley once again contemplating what might have been.
