Clarets make Turf Moor return to take on the Villans

Burnley continue the 2023/24 Premier League campaign on Sunday afternoon (2pm KO) as the Clarets host Aston Villa at Turf Moor.

Vincent Kompany’s side had a game-free weekend last week after the originally scheduled fixture with Luton Town was postponed due to the Hatters’ stadium still being under development.

Turf Moor is set for another full house on Sunday as the Clarets look to get their first victory of the new season on the board.

The Clarets have bolstered their squad once again this week ahead of the clash with the arrival of defender Hannes Delcroix from RSC Anderlecht and midfielder Aaron Ramsey from boyhood club Villa.

Josh Cullen also committed his future to the Club for a further three years after penning a new long-term deal.

Aston Villa

Unai Emery arrived at Villa Park in October last year and remarkably took the club from 16th place to finish 7th and secure a UEFA Europa Conference League spot.

Now in his first full season in charge, Villa and Emery strengthened the side in the summer with the additions of Youri Tielemans from Leicester City, Moussa Diaby of Bayer Leverkusen, Pau Torres from Villareal and Nicolo Zaniolo arriving from Galatasaray.

Midfielder John McGinn was named captain ahead of the 2023/24 season and was rewarded a new contract to extend his stay at Villa Park until 2027.

Departures were minimal in the summer for Villa, losing just two players as Ashley Young joined Everton and Marvelous Nakamba signed for Luton Town following his loan spell last year at Kenilworth Road.

Form Guide

The Clarets head into Sunday’s match having only played once so far this season which was the opening day 3-0 defeat to Manchester City at Turf Moor.

Last weekend’s scheduled fixture with Luton at Kenilworth Road was postponed due to the stadium still undergoing construction, a new date for the match will be announced in due course.

Villa meanwhile have had an up-and-down start to the campaign, following a 5-1 defeat to Newcastle United on the opening weekend at St James’ Park.

Emery’s men followed that loss up with scoring nine goals in two games without conceding. First up was an impressive 4-0 thrashing over Everton last Sunday at Villa Park, before getting their UEFA Conference League Qualification two-legged tie with Hibernian underway with a 5-0 win over at Easter Road on Wednesday night.

What Vincent Kompany said

“If you have the mindset that we have and that is ‘try and win every game’ then really the only thing we focus on is the next game.

"For me, I’m fine with it, I think the first win will come when it comes. I don’t think we have to think too much about it.

"Whatever happened in the past is not so important. It’s the next game and we’ll prepare with everything we can to get the result we can at home."

“It’s (Aston Villa) a very impressive squad. You can see it’s one of those squads who have settled into the Premier League a little bit now.

"They’ve been able to have a few rounds of recruitment and a few rounds of developing their own players and it’s a robust team.

"They're athletic, good speed, definitely worth being a part of discussion for that top eight in England which is such a high standard, such a high level.”
