Matt Lowton believes the Clarets have had a successful season but will be looking to do better again next time around.
Burnley could finish as high as 15th place in the table with victory in their final game at Sheffield United.
A seventh away victory would also give them their second highest points’ tally as a Premier League club with 42.
But Lowton says just staying up after such a demanding campaign – which brought just two points from the opening seven games – is a notable effort.
“We have achieved what we wanted to achieve again,” said the Clarets’ defender ahead of a return to one of his former clubs.
“We would have liked to have finished a bit higher up the table, but we didn’t start very well.
“We picked up and got some good points on the board to get where we needed to be - over the line.
“The results since haven’t been great but the main aim has been achieved so it's been a successful season, although next season we will be looking to put more points on the board then we have now.”
The Clarets have suffered successive home defeats to Leeds and Liverpool since a sixth away victory of the season at Fulham guaranteed a sixth successive season of top-flight football.
But Lowton hopes a winning finish could still see them improve on their current place just one spot above the relegation zone.
Defeats for Newcastle at Fulham and Brighton would leave the door open for Sean Dyche’s men if they can send the relegated Blades – in front of their returning fans – back down to the Championship with a loss.
“There are a couple of teams we can catch,” added Lowton, who started his career at Bramall Lane and made almost 100 appearances for the South Yorkshire club.
“We will be going there looking to get the three points and hopefully the other results go our way.”
