16 Clarets players are currently out on season-long loan deals across nine leagues and three countries, including the Premier League, Vanarama National League North & Belgian Pro League.
That tally includes nine players from the academy here at the Club, with Finn Armstrong helping Curzon Ashton to two wins over the Easter weekend. Elsewhere, senior figure CJ Egan-Riley played the full 90 minutes, but couldn’t prevent Hibernian falling to a narrow defeat at Dundee United.
Here’s a round-up of how the first eight loanees, in alphabetical order, have fared with their clubs since our last edition of ‘Loan Watch: Part One’ back on 3rd April.
Make sure to look out for ‘Loan Watch: Part Two’ to keep up to date with how the other eight fared over the same period.
Bobby Thomas (Barnsley)
Defender Thomas’ automatic promotion hopes with Michael Duff’s Reds took a knock on Good Friday as they lost 2-1 at Burton Albion.
LOAN WATCH: PART ONE - Image 1
Bouncing back strong though, he again played the full game on Easter Monday as they won by the same scoreline at home against Shrewsbury Town in a game which saw a man sent off for both teams. Barnsley are now 4th in Sky Bet League One.
This week’s game(s): SAT – Forest Green Rovers (A)
CJ Egan-Riley (Hibernian)
As mentioned above, Egan-Riley and Hibs lost out to bottom club Dundee United in the Scottish Premier League on Easter Sunday.
Jamie McGrath’s injury time penalty saw the hosts pick up the three points, with Hibs 6th and clinging onto a top half finish with two games remaining until the division splits. A derby against Hearts awaits this weekend.
This week’s game(s): SAT – Hearts (H)
Dane McCullough (Hyde United)
Northern Ireland youth international McCullough is another chasing promotion this term, but he and Hyde endured a disappointing Easter weekend.
LOAN WATCH: PART ONE - Image 2
First losing 2-1 at home against Morpeth Town on Saturday afternoon, a game which McCullough was an unused substitute in, they then drew 2-2 at Stalybridge Celtic yesterday lunchtime and conceded from the penalty spot in injury time to drop two points. The full-back played the 90 minutes against Celtic.
This week’s game(s): SAT – Marine (H)
Dara Costelloe (Bradford City)
Costelloe, from the other side of the Irish border, saw Bradford pick up four points from their two games over the Easter weekend, though was only involved in one.
Coming off the bench on 64 minutes in a goalless draw at Crawley Town on Good Friday, the versatile attacker was then not in the Bantams’ squad for Easter Monday’s 3-1 win at home against Sutton United.
This week’s game(s): SAT – Rochdale (A)
Enock Agyei (K.V. Mechelen)
Belgian Agyei played the full game for Mechelen on Saturday as they lost out 4-1 at home to OH Leuven.
LOAN WATCH: PART ONE - Image 3
Steven Defour’s side are 13th in the Pro League, comfortably mid-table, as we approach the closing stages of the campaign.
This week’s game(s): SUN – Gent (H)
Finn Armstrong (Curzon Ashton)
As noted in the opening lines of this week’s ‘Loan Watch: Part One’, full-back Armstrong helped Curzon to two 1-0 wins over the Easter weekend in the Vanarama National League North, coming off the bench in both games to help them over the line.
First playing the last five minutes of Good Friday’s success in North Yorkshire against Scarborough Athletic, he was then introduced 66 minutes into yesterday’s victory against Spennymoor Town on home soil. ‘The Nash’ have five games left and are four points off the play-offs.
This week’s game(s): SAT – Blyth Spartans (A)
Harry Moss (Padiham)
Goalkeeper Moss has been unable to break back into Padiham’s side since the Storks’ number one recovered from injury. He is however eligible for the academy side’s squads here at the club during his loan.
LOAN WATCH: PART ONE - Image 4
Accordingly, he appeared on the bench for the U21s in their 1-0 defeat at Millwall on Monday and on Thursday as they lost out 4-1 to a Cornell University XI at the Burnley Training Centre. Padiham meanwhile drew 2-2 with Kendal Town at home on Tuesday night before seeing yesterday’s trip to Barnoldswick Town postponed.
This week’s game(s): SAT – Litherland REMY (A)
Joe McGlynn (Kidderminster Harriers)
Striker McGlynn also wasn’t involved with his loan club this week, with his omission from Kidderminster’s squads injury related.
The Harriers earned six points over the weekend, winning 1-0 at home against Buxton on Friday – scoring 37 seconds in – and 2-0 at AFC Fylde yesterday afternoon. Like Curzon, they’re now four points off the play-offs though have just three games remaining.
This week’s game(s): SAT – AFC Telford United (H)
