16 Clarets players are currently out on season-long loan deals across nine leagues and three countries, including the Premier League, Vanarama National League North & Belgian Pro League.
That tally includes nine players from the academy here at the Club, with Bobby Thomas netting in consecutive games for promotion-chasing Barnsley. CJ Egan-Riley meanwhile is coming up to the split in the Scottish Premiership, and is looking to help Hibernian cement their spot in the top half ahead of that.
Here’s a round-up of how the first eight loanees, in alphabetical order, have fared with their clubs over the last week. Make sure to look out for ‘Loan Watch: Part Two’ to keep up to date with how the other eight fared.
Bobby Thomas (Barnsley)
Centre back Thomas enjoyed the most successful week of the eight, scoring twice for the Tykes in Sky Bet League One.
First netting in a 3-1 defeat at Exeter City on Tuesday, he then headed home the last goal of a 5-0 win against Morecambe at Oakwell on Saturday as the Reds bounced back. They’ve now won 11 of the last 14, losing only twice.
This week’s game(s): FRI – Burton Albion (A)
CJ Egan-Riley (Hibernian)
North of the border, versatile midfielder Egan-Riley played 63 minutes on Saturday as Hibs lost out 3-1 at home to Motherwell.
They now sit 6th, just inside the top half with three games remaining until the league splits in two.
This week’s game(s): SUN – Dundee United (A)
Dane McCullough (Hyde United)
Full-back McCullough’s hopes of a play-off finish with Hyde also took a knock on Saturday with a goalless draw at home against Whitby Town.
The Tigers have now dropped out of the top five on goal difference with four games of the campaign remaining.
This week’s game(s): SAT – Morpeth Town (H)
Dara Costelloe (Bradford City)
Also hoping to be in the play-offs come the end of the season are Sky Bet League One outfit Bradford, where Irishman Costelloe is on loan.
He was an unused substitute on Saturday in a 3-2 win at Valley Parade against Grimsby Town, City’s first win in five following four successive draws. They sit 6th with a three-point cushion in the top seven at the time of writing.
This week’s game(s): FRI – Crawley Town (A)
Enock Agyei (K.V. Mechelen)
Versatile forward Agyei is further afield in Belgium with Steven Defour’s Mechelen, who are comfortably in mid-table in the Pro League.
The teenager played the final half-an-hour yesterday in a 3-0 defeat to Club Brugge on home soil.
This week’s game(s): SAT – OH Leuven (H)
Finn Armstrong (Curzon Ashton)
Armstrong is in the Vanarama National League North with Curzon, and the full-back came on for the closing stages of a goalless draw at home with Bradford Park Avenue on Saturday afternoon.
The Nash are 12th, six points outside the play-off spots with seven matches remaining this term.
This week’s game(s): FRI – Scarborough Athletic (A)
Harry Moss (Padiham)
Second-year scholar Moss is further down the pyramid with Padiham in the North West Counties Football League Premier Division. The goalkeeper is also able to play for the Clarets’ academy sides during his loan, and was on the bench for the U21s 1-1 draw with Peterborough United last Monday.
He then wasn’t involved in Padiham’s 3-2 defeat at Northwich Victoria on Wednesday or their 2-2 draw at home against AFC Liverpool on Saturday.
This week’s game(s): TUE – Kendal Town (H)
Joe McGlynn (Kidderminster Harriers)
Striker McGlynn also wasn’t involved with his loan club this week, still struggling with an injury.
Russell Penn’s side beat Farsley Celtic 1-0 away from home on Saturday, scoring early on.
This week’s game(s): FRI – Buxton (H)
