Kirstie Levell says she and her Burnley Women team-mates are keen to end the 2023/24 season on a high when Derby County visit Turf Moor on Sunday afternoon.
The Clarets go into the match following back-to-back victories over Liverpool Feds and West Didsbury & Chorlton, with the latter earning them silverware in the Lancashire FA Senior Cup.
Burnley are guaranteed a 2nd place finish behind Newcastle United, while Derby are hoping to finish 6th with a win on the final day.
Speaking ahead of Sunday’s game, Levell said: “It’s going to be a totally different game to the last time we played them.
“It was on astro then and this time it’s on a bigger pitch at Turf Moor which suits us well, but I also think it suits them.
“I think it will be quite a challenging game but it’s important to finish the season well, not only to show the hard work that we’ve put in throughout the season but to give us something to plan from for when we come back in the summer”.
This is Levell’s first season as a Claret, with the 27-year-old joining upon the expiration of her contract with Women’s Super League side Leicester City.
“I’ve really enjoyed my time at Burnley Women,” she continued.
“The staff and players have been nothing but welcoming and I’ve been able to express myself because of their belief in me.
“I’ve found myself as more of a senior player, which I haven’t been at most of the clubs I’ve been at.
“As such I’ve tried to pass on some experience and push my team-mates through things – of course winning the league was our target and it’s a shame that we haven’t achieved that, but we’ve achieved many other things.”
The player Kirstie works the most closely with is fellow goalkeeper Lucy Farrell, who at 20 years of age is still in the infancy of her career.
“I find her so funny”, said Levell.
“She’s somebody who really wants to settle down and work hard in her sessions and is always asking questions – whether that’s to Jordan (Booth, Goalkeeper Coach) or myself.
“That’s such a nice thing because you can always get answers from your coaches but there’s nothing better than somebody who has experience in your position.
“With the goalkeeper union as we call it, it’s all about backing each other when mistakes happen.”
Levell played the entirety of the team’s recent victory over Liverpool Feds at Turf Moor, keeping a clean sheet against the team she started her football journey with.
That was her first time playing at the stadium and she’s hopeful of doing so again this weekend.
When asked how she found the experience, she explained: “We are a team that wants to entertain the fans and put on a show, and there’s no better pitch to do that than Turf Moor.
“We want to get the ball down and play and it’s a beautiful pitch – I had no complaints about bobbly back passes!
“There was excitement and possibly a few nerves from everybody. For some of the group that was one of the biggest crowds they’ve played in front of in their careers and that’s just a tease of what they could experience later down the line.
“The sooner people can thrive off situations like that, the better.”
