Last week, women’s team players Kirstie Levell and Jade Richards visited Burnley FC’s Women and Girls Coaching Scheme to share insights into their playing careers and their journeys into coaching.
The scheme is designed to inspire women and girls aged 16+ to pursue a future in coaching.
Participants take part in a series of insight sessions, hearing from coaches across the Club and Community to learn about different pathways into coaching and explore what makes an effective coach.
As part of the programme each participant has been assigned a mentor, and the Club has funded their Introduction to Coaching, Introduction to First Aid in Football, Safeguarding Children, and EFAiF qualifications.
This month’s insight day included an insightful Q&A with Kirstie and Jade about their playing and coaching experiences.
Both women spoke openly about their journeys, how they both grew up playing in boys’ teams, the increased opportunities now available for girls, and their hopes of moving into coaching once their playing careers come to an end.
They offered honest, inspiring reflections on how they reached the positions they’re in today and their passion for supporting the next generation of Lionesses.
Reflecting on the event, Richards said: “It was a really good day.
“To know that the Club facilitates this kind of programme is great, and it can inspire more female coaches to get involved with the game.”
Burnley FC in the Community’s Female Football Development Manager Rebecca Aldred added: “The session was fantastic.
“Throughout this scheme, the women and girls have had some brilliant opportunities to work with a range of coaches across the organisation, but we are still missing that female representation, which is exactly why this scheme exists.
“Having Kirstie and Jade join us really opened the door to the women’s game and highlighted the stark differences between the women’s and men’s coaching worlds. Both players were incredibly inspiring, and you could see the impact they made throughout the day.”
Women and Girls Coaching Scheme participant Aneisa commented: “Meeting Kirstie and Jade was very insightful. Seeing how times have changed through their eyes and learning how to best utilise their experience to support my own team was invaluable.
“They’ve been in the game since they were young, yet they still have so much love and passion for the team and women's football. They were complete open books, and it was great to hear from active players who are already UEFA B qualified.”
