Deashon Lawrence’s first-half goal was the difference as a Burnley U18s side lost to Bolton Wanderers B in the Lancashire FA Senior Cup final on Tuesday night.

With Wednesday night’s Premier League Cup semi-final against Queens Park Rangers on the mind, the Clarets fielded a young team featuring U18s, U17s and U16s.

There were four changes from the side that started Saturday’s U18s defeat to Cardiff City, with Jack McEvilly returning to the heart of the defence.

U16 Dylan Morison started in central midfield alongside a more experienced head in Adam McCoy, while Zach Johnson featured following his U21s exploits last week.

It took a little while for the game to kick into life at the County Ground in Leyland, with both teams weighing each other up and much of the play taking place in the middle third.

Our first chance of note came around the 20-minute mark when after Brandon Pouani produced a good piece of skill to win a corner, he headed a deep Johnson cross wide.

Vernon Masara came close to the opening goal when he produced a powerful effort from 22 yards, but Bolton ‘keeper Luke Hutchinson tipped it over the bar.

Wanderers started to build a head of steam and after Joe Tode and Lawrence forced fairly comfortable saves from Connor Edwards, the latter broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time.

James Westwood’s shot was only half blocked by the Clarets defence and Lawrence was able to convert from close range at the back post.

The visitors started the second half on the same foot as they forced three corners in quick succession, but none of them came to anything.

Manager Tony Philliskirk freshened things up on the hour, replacing Noah Adekoya with Albert Blackie before George Brierley and Morison made way for Luca Scanlon and Fabio So respectively.

The young Clarets continued to push forward at every opportunity and looked comfortable when in possession, but Bolton stayed married to their structure and were tough to break down.

Two more attacking changes with 70 on the clock saw Pouani make way for Corey King and Braidin Derbyshire take the place of Masara.

Substitute David Abimbola almost doubled Bolton’s lead in the final 10 minutes, but his shot on the turn was put behind by Edwards.

Burnley huffed and puffed right until the final whistle but were unable to work the Bolton ‘keeper, with the match ending 1-0.

Philliskirk’s side finish their regular league season at home to Colchester United on Friday 2nd May, before taking on Watford in the Professional Development League semi-finals later in the month.
