Premier League Cup semi-final awaits

Burnley U21s will be aiming to continue their near-perfect run in the Premier League Cup when they travel south to take on Queens Park Rangers on Wednesday night.

After a dominant set of group stage results, Andy Farrell’s side could book their place in the final of the national competition with a positive result in West London.

The young Clarets head into it in a rich vein of form, having won five straight matches in all competitions.

Fleetwood Town were their latest opponents last Friday, and a 3-0 victory over the Cods confirmed our place in the Professional Development League’s end-of-season play-offs.

Tom Tweedy opened the scoring on a windy afternoon across Lancashire, before second half goals from Kian McMahon-Brown and Noah Adekoya secured all three points.

Our Premier League Cup journey started away at Luton Town all the way back in October, and Farrell’s side recorded 16 points from a possible 18 in Group G.

Tweedy then scored the solitary goal in a round of 16 victory over Sunderland, and the Welshman found the back of the net alongside Julien Vetro in a well-earned quarter-final victory over Chelsea.

Queens Park Rangers also topped their group but found the going slightly tougher, winning three and drawing another of their six outings.

The Rs then managed an impressive 2-0 victory over Leicester City in the first knock-out stage, before progressing to the last four with a 3-2 victory over West Bromwich Albion.

They had to show real resilience that night, coming from behind twice thanks to a brace from Cian Dillon and another strike from Emmerson Sutton.

Rangers fielded a team largely made up of U18s for their league trip to Barnsley two days ago and lost 4-0, with all goals coming in the second half.

With one league game to go, manager Paul Furlong’s side sit second bottom of the south section table.

These two teams met at the County Ground in Leyland back in September, and the Clarets enjoyed a rampant 6-0 victory in the Autumn sunshine.

After Kamarni Ryan opened the scoring, Farrell’s side took control with two goals in five minutes from Will Hugill and Vernon Masara.

Joe Bauress made it 4-0 from the penalty spot and after Joao Mendes headed his first goal in Claret and Blue, Ryan rounded off a fantastic day with his second goal in second-half stoppage time.
