Vincent Kompany says his side must ‘get the goals they deserve’ in games to prevent a ‘bitter feeling’ in the Clarets camp like tonight after Stoke’s late equaliser at Turf Moor.
Connor Roberts’ goal early on in the second half had handed Burnley a deserved lead, but the visitors grabbed an 87th minute equaliser via Harry Clarke which meant the points were shared.
Kompany addressed the media post-match, giving his thoughts on the game, where his side can learn from tonight’s events, and moving on quickly.
Kompany on the late goal:
“Football is made of moments, and that was a big moment tonight, but it’s one that you can’t see coming. It’s part of the game, and every experienced player will tell you that, but we’ve been left with a bitter taste again.
“Today, you’ve got nearly everything that you want in a game other than the extra goal, but you shouldn’t always have to depend on it. We looked like the side more likely to score, but no matter how much I look at it, it’s painful and you can’t get used to it.
“The league table shows that it’s a rollercoaster league, and at some point, these types of performances will lead to a run of wins.
“We’re bitter about it, but the challenge now is to stay mentally calm in this league. We know that this will hurt tonight, but we must build towards Saturday.”
Kompany on making opportunities count:
“We’ve had enough chances to put it to bed, and one moments turns this into a night that we didn’t really want to have. These nights are tough to take.
“We were controlling and weren’t conceding chances, like I said the better side throughout, but we’ve got to get the goals that we deserve. If we do that, we put this to bed and move on.
“At the moment, it’s like we need to score two or three to put a game to bed. It has to turn into where 1-0 is a comfortable score for us.”
Kompany on desire:
“There are 10 of them [Burnley players] in the box when the cross comes in for their goal. I think there’s only three of four of them, so I can’t complain – and I won’t – at the work rate & the passion of the team to defend their goal.
“You’ve got to challenge better though, even if it’s just to deny the quality of that header, and the players will hear it from me. I’m expecting us to do better in that aspect in future games.
“The good thing is that the problems we have are clear to see, that helps us, and we know how to solve them. Nothing is insolvable.”
Kompany on Connor Roberts’ goal:
“It’s positive for him and for the team. It’s good to have others sharing the goals, and it’s always hard to go home with any satisfaction after a draw like this, but the performances are stable.
“The team is improving and that will eventually lead to more wins, I know that for sure.”
Kompany on moving on quickly:
“We all feel the same way, really gutted, but the main thing is that we’ve got another game in three days’ time so this can’t afford to drag on until tomorrow.
“We will take the feeling to bed that we have now, but tomorrow we will go again and start looking towards Coventry.
