Josh Brownhill says that the overriding feelings of frustration & disappointment from last night’s draw with Stoke City are clear, but believes the performances being put in warrant more points and they will come.
The midfielder picked up an assist for Connor Roberts’ opener, his seventh goal contribution in the opening 12 league games of this season, but Harry Clarke’s header with three minutes remaining denied the Clarets a third consecutive home win.
Brownhill spoke to the Club’s media post-match, reflecting on the game as well as his belief in the squad and another brilliant atmosphere at Turf Moor.
Brownhill on the draw with the Potters:
“I thought for probably 85 minutes, we absolutely dominated the game. Pretty much from start to finish, the boys did really well. We won second balls a lot, worked really hard, created some chances and up until then I thought we were in really good control.
“A few mistakes were made, and they seem to score from it, which is frustrating. He goes down the wing, I should’ve taken him down, he’s put the ball in the box, and they take their chance.
“It’s incredibly frustrating. We’ve been in the lead so many times and dropped points but you’ve got to take positives and I thought for pretty much the majority of the game we controlled it and deserved to win. It’s football though and anything can happen.”
Brownhill on conceding late:
“It’s definitely disappointing. With the team that we’ve got and the performances that we’ve been putting in, we’ve deserved to win the majority of the games, but the reality is that we haven’t.
“I think we’re still five points off the top and that’s our aim. We’ve been performing very well so as soon as we cut out those mistakes and put a few more in the back of the net, I’m sure we’ll fly up the league.”
Brownhill on his assist:
“I want to keep contributing and if I can’t get a goal, then the next best thing is to get an assist. I’m always trying to create chances and I felt like I created a few today.
“Unfortunately, we didn’t score many, we got one, but I’m delighted for Connor. He’s put in so much work and he fully deserves that goal.”
Brownhill on bouncing back at Coventry this weekend:
“I’m excited for the game, it’s another one to go and get three points. The results of the past two games probably feel more like losses for us even though we’ve performed well and deserved more.
“We want to be winning games and go on a big run, so it’s another game to go and perform well. I have no doubt that we will and hopefully this time around, we’ll put a few more away & keep a clean sheet.”
Brownhill on the backing of the Clarets fans:
“[They were] absolutely brilliant again [tonight]. Even when they travelled away to Cardiff, it’s a far trip, and their numbers & voices were very good.
“We’re disappointed again that we haven’t been able to send them home happy with three points, but I feel like they can see what we’re trying to do and the good performances all round from the majority of the players.
“Hopefully if we can continue these performances, the points will come, and we’ll fly up the league.”
