Burnley took a point in Sky Bet Championship action from a 1-1 draw with Stoke City on a damp evening at Turf Moor.
Connor Roberts had handed the Clarets a lead early on in the second half after dominating proceedings in the opening 45 minutes, and despite continuing in the same vein, visitors Stoke struck late through substitute Harry Clarke’s header to earn themselves some reward from their midweek trip to East Lancashire.
Vincent Kompany made three changes from Saturday’s draw at Cardiff City as Jordan Beyer, Vitinho & Manuel Benson all started. They replaced Charlie Taylor, Ian Maatsen, and Johann Berg Gudmundsson who all began on the bench.
Meanwhile, following their 4-0 defeat at home to Watford last time out, Alex Neil made two changes to his Potters side. Phil Jagielka returned alongside Tyrese Campbell, with Aden Flint & Josh Laurent losing their places. Flint was named amongst the substitutes.
Prior to kick-off, both teams, their staff, and all present at Turf Moor observed a minute’s silence for those affected by the tragic events at the Kanjuruhan Stadium in Indonesia.
First Half
After a quiet start to the contest, the first half chance fell the way of the visitors seven minutes in with Josh Cullen blocking away Tariqe Fosu’s rasping shot at goal from the edge of the area.
Burnley’s first chance came soon after, Jay Rodriguez’s flick-on allowing Josh Brownhill to thread a ball through to Nathan Tella whose low strike was held by Potters goalkeeper Josef Bursik.
Midfielder Brownhill then whipped a shot goalward, but it was held comfortably by Bursik. The shot stopper also held onto an effort from Benson which came from an acute angle on the right-hand side of the box after the Belgian had beaten his man to carve out the opportunity.
And on 23 minutes, Rodriguez grazed the top of the crossbar with a swerving strike of his own from distance after a quick free-kick taken by Roberts as the Clarets continued to push for the opener.
Benson was the next to guide a shot over Bursik’s bar, this time directly from a free-kick. And with the very last kick of the half, midfielder Cullen forced Bursik into a fingertip save with a powerful attempt at the edge of the area.

There wasn’t enough time to take the resulting corner, so that proved to be the last action of note in an opening 45 minutes which ended goalless.
Second Half
Four minutes into the second 45, Tella picked the pocket of Stoke defender Ben Wilmot who slipped at the back and was bearing down on goal, but veteran Jagielka made a last-ditch tackle to stop the attack in its tracks.
Moments after, Arijanet Muric then had to spring into action at the other end for the first time in the game, blocking behind a shot from Campbell one-on-one. He then held Dwight Gayle’s point-blank header less than 60 seconds later.
The chances continued to flow in quick succession, with the next going to Burnley, as the game became end-to-end.
On 52 minutes, Brownhill swung a ball in which ended up back at the head of Taylor Harwood-Bellis via a flicked clearance by a Stoke defender and Tella’s own header back into the six-yard box. When the centre back’s effort hit Bursik and stayed out, he swung a half volley back at goal which bobbled off Rodriguez and over the bar with more than an unluckiness about it.
But Kompany’s side did get their opener two minutes later, and it came from Roberts who grabbed his first of the season. The full back played a nice one-two with Brownhill to creep around his marker, and unleashed a rocket which flew past Bursik into the back of the net.
Muric then saved from Liam Delap – who had been played through by Campbell - at close range prior to the hour-mark while Tella again picked Wilmot’s pocket, this one inside the area, but was foiled by Bursik who scrambled to tip the ball behind for a corner.
That delivery was headed behind for another set-piece, which when delivered by Brownhill was flicked away by a Potters man but rebounded off teammate Wilmot and was heading into the back of the net had it not been for the intervention of Delap on the line. Eventually however, at the third time of asking, the visitors cleared the danger.

On 82 minutes, Brownhill again took a shot at goal from range with Bursik’s palms stung, but the ‘keeper grabbed hold of the ball at the second attempt.
But with a rare attack, the visitors levelled things up with three minutes remaining via substitute Clarke. The Potters man guided Fosu’s cross past Muric with a header.
Six minutes were added on at the end of the second half, in which both sides searched for a late winner without any real action of note, and the full time whistle brought an end to proceedings at 1-1 with the points shared.
