Manager Vincent Kompany admits there was room for improvement in his side’s performance against the Bluebirds at the Cardiff City Stadium.
Nathan Tella opened the scoring for the Clarets early in the second half, latching onto Ian Maatsen’s low cross, before Callum Robinson equalised in the 90th minute for the hosts.
Post-match in the Welsh capital, Kompany discussed the performance, conceding late on, Tella’s game and bringing Charlie Taylor back into the XI.
Kompany on the performance in Cardiff:
“I think in the end, based on the performance, we probably didn’t deserve more than a point.
“If you reflect on it honestly, then you can say we have had better performances this season.
“It was always going to be a little bit of an unpredictable narrative, with a new coach coming in for them (Cardiff) and the lift that can create.
“Then you have a little bit of unpredictability with tactics before the game and you have the international break with players travelling all over the world.
“So, I won’t surprise you to say that I have seen this happen before and unfortunately today it was a little bit more of a challenge for us, but it does hurt to conceded in the last minute.”
Kompany on conceding the late equaliser:
“They are the toughest ones to take, it could have been a draw and had they equalised much earlier on, you don’t really look back at the game.
“But this one, being so late on, it tests your resilience a little bit, but we can’t be too disappointed from it.
“It’s a 46-game season, there is going to be games like this, we have another game on Wednesday and ready to move on.”
Kompany on Tella’s performance:
“I think it’s just monitoring what works for him and giving him the confidence to go out there and enjoy it.
“The rest of it, he’s a talented player and we know that. His profile, he’s a quick attacking player and sometimes it’s hard to sustain that for the full 90 minutes.
“The positive side is that we will have him for Wednesday fresh and fit for the game.”
Kompany on bringing Charlie Taylor back into the side:
“We are going to need everyone; I don’t want to get tangled up in something that isn’t anything more than just using all members of the squad, based on the fitness of the players and the opposition.
“We have lost a big chunk of our squad to internationals; they have come back, and we are preparing for a game with very little information about today’s opponent.
“So, bringing an experienced player like Charlie back into the side today is never a bad thing.”
Kompany on taking positives into the Stoke match next week:
“For us, it’s about our own basics and our own game. Winning the second balls, being aggressive and moving the ball with purpose.
“A couple of those basics were lacking today and straight away the dynamic of the game changed then.
“We’re looking forward to Wednesday now, back at home in front of our fans and hopefully put in a good performance.”
