Vincent Kompany was happy with his side’s performance in their 1-1 draw away at Preston North End on Tuesday night, but acknowledged that they could’ve had all three points from the Lilywhites.
The Clarets chief spoke to the media post-match at Deepdale to discuss the game, fine margins, and a tantalising midweek derby atmosphere in West Lancashire.
Kompany on the point:
“It’s a difficult one. It’s a derby, so that’s a point gained, but the way we played, we deserved more.
“We created a lot of chances in the first half and we could’ve finished the game off, but we didn’t. I’ve always got a different assessment [when I re-watch a match], but when you start trying to force things, it becomes difficult.”
Kompany on adapting to in-game situations:
“They went from five [defenders] and three [midfielders] to five and four, so it was nine players in the box in the second half for them compared to eight in the first half.
“For us, before this game, they’d racked up clean sheets in a row, we’re putting crosses in and for them that’s easy. They could do that waking up in the morning.
“The chances we created towards the end with cut backs and with runs inside the box were good.
“We didn’t get on the end of them, but with just one touch it’s a goal, and if we keep putting ourselves in those areas – particularly in second halves – we’ll get goals. It’s about the fine margins which we have to keep working on.”
Kompany on Preston’s leveller:
“It's more like back-to-back set pieces. We defend the first corner quite well, then the ball comes back in, and I think someone slipped.
“I need to see the goal again but I think if that person doesn’t slip, we can handle the second phase. That’s football though, it can happen on your side and it can happen on the other side.”
Kompany on positive signs:
“We’ve got players who have shown enough today, there’s still a lot more to come from players like [Anass] Zaroury who played his first game [for the Club] tonight.”

Kompany on the derby day atmosphere:
“It was lovely, I liked it. I got a little bit of abuse for the very first time! It’s all good though, there’s a good level of rivalry. I think overall we’ve done well in a derby away from home.
“We kept them relatively quiet and kept it relatively dominant. In the first half, we just felt it was a matter of time. Credit to them, they made the change, and then it became a matter of patience. Sometimes we just weren’t patient enough.”
