Vincent Kompany says his side must take the energy and ability shown in Saturday’s second half at Sunderland into Tuesday evening’s home meeting with Norwich City at Turf Moor.
The Clarets produced an awe-inspiring second half comeback in the North East, coming from 2-0 down with four unanswered second half goals to make it 13 league games unbeaten, and claim all three points.
Boss Kompany addressed the media post-match, discussing coming through a game like the one at the Stadium of Light, keeping focused, and the character in the squad.
Kompany on a game of two halves:
“Pretty much every lesson we need to have in football was in this game. I hated everything about the first half, the way we turned up, and it starts with intensity, challenges, running etc.
“You can have a bad day but the basics weren’t there for us. The second half had everything I love about the game – keeping going, showing energy, getting to the first challenge and the first ball then the second.

“Getting wingers in positions where they could take people on, I could go on, but ‘a game of two halves’ is a good statement to describe it.
“It’s the Championship, there’s so many halves [of football] and turning it round is the best we could’ve done. Hopefully we take the energy of the second half here into our next game.”
Kompany on the basics:
“The main thing for me is that [in this situation], you get to know about the team and they get to know about you.
“I can accept a defeat, or a team being better than us, but there’s got to be more of a fight.
“Sunderland were really good in the first half, so fair play to them, they’ve got a lot of injuries and are going through a period where they’ve had to find solutions to different problems, so they did ever so well. It was a tough game, that’s all I can say.”
Kompany on a big half time:
“When your basics go, then I don’t think you need to mess about. I can move as many magnets as I want on a tactics board, but it’s pointless if you’re not doing the basics right and magnets don’t score goals.
“Fair play to the lads, we haven’t really encountered this type of situation this season so far, it’s the first time we’ve come across it. When you drop from your basics, you go frontal.

“I didn’t see a dressing room with their heads down though, they’re more demanding on themselves than that and they know when it isn’t right. They want it to be right."
Kompany on taking things game by game:
“You can make all the statements you want in the Championship, but then on Tuesday we’re back again so for me, there’s not too many statements to be made and it’s more about lessons.
“Today are the biggest ones we could’ve had and I’m not going to say we got away with it because our second half performance warrants more than that, but we all know this could’ve been a really poor day.
“The lessons are one, never give up, and two, if you drop your standards in this league then you’re bang average.”
Kompany on the Clarets travelling support:
“For us, it was about getting them going. I keep saying to the players about being ‘Burnley’ and the only way to gain respect from people is to work hard, you have to put in an incredible grind.
“You put that forward and people can forgive you a bad game, but that wasn’t the story of the first half and then the second half is probably beyond anything anyone can even expect. It was relentless and I’m really happy about it.”
