In a memorable game of two halves, Burnley scored four unanswered second half goals to claim three points on the road in Sunderland with a 4-2 victory.
Trailing 2-0 at the break, the Clarets came out firing at the restart and goals from Nathan Tella, Manuel Benson, Anass Zaroury & Josh Brownhill ensured over 2,000 travelling fans in the packed-out away end at the Stadium of Light would be sent home happy.
Vincent Kompany tweaked his side in two positions from Wednesday night’s 1-1 draw at Birmingham City. Johann Berg Gudmundsson, Burnley’s scorer in midweek, started in the North East while Ashley Barnes also made the 11.
Accordingly, Jack Cork and Jay Rodriguez were named as substitutes with hosts Sunderland, managed by Tony Mowbray, making two changes from their midweek defeat as Trai Hume & Amad replaced Ajibola Alese & Patrick Roberts. Neither of the latter pair were involved at the Stadium of Light.
Burnley debuted their away kit, sponsored by EMA, on Wearside.
First Half
Mowbray’s Black Cats started well and saw Elliot Embleton bring Arijanet Muric into action early on, with the big Kosovan holding onto his effort.

And after a bit of a lull, the hosts took the lead on 16 minutes through Manchester United loanee Amad. He slotted past Muric having been presented the ball inside the area following some good footwork by Jack Clarke.
Tella fired over the bar at the other end soon after, but it was 2-0 on 20 minutes when Dan Neil smashed home from close range as the ball fell to him in the box from a ricochet.
With little action of note in a first half which lasted 50 minutes, there was only two half-chances for the Clarets with Gudmundsson’s shot blocked and Vitinho firing over in time added on after a one-two with Brownhill, who captained the team.
Second Half
Kompany introduced Benson from the bench at the break, and the Clarets were back in the contest almost straight away via the head of Tella who glanced home from Gudmundsson’s corner.

He had Taylor Harwood-Bellis to thank, with the defender nodding the set-piece back into the danger zone from the back post.
Amad then spurned an opportunity for the hosts while substitute Benson’s cross from the right wing to the near post almost caught out Black Cats ‘keeper Anthony Patterson but he scrambled to clear.
On the hour-mark though, Benson wouldn’t be denied and he levelled things up courtesy of a searching cross which evaded everyone to nestle in the far corner of the net.
Moments later, Muric had to be alert to prevent the hosts going back in front through Clarke who had broken the backline to find space for a strike in the box.
For the remainder, Kompany’s men continued to build pressure on the hosts’ goal, with Zaroury curling an effort wide.

And the phrase ‘if you don’t succeed, try again’ was brought to fruition on 70 minutes as the winger took on the same shot but this time found the top corner to put Burnley 3-2 ahead.
The Clarets kept Sunderland at bay after that, with Muric not troubled, and  with two minutes of the 90 remaining sealed the three points with a goal from Brownhill.
Taking advantage of the hosts pushing numbers upfield, Burnley got the ball to Benson who had Brownhill to his left with only one defender in sight, and when the Belgian squared for the midfielder, he made no mistake one-on-one with Patterson.
The result sealed a first-ever win for the Clarets at the Stadium of Light, a first in Sunderland since 1979, and a first in the league in the city since December 1972.
