Vincent Kompany and Josh Brownhill shortlisted for 2023 EFL Awards

Manager Vincent Kompany admitted it was the 'perfect script' this afternoon, as the Clarets beat the Sky Blues 1-0 at the CBS Arena.

Nathan Tella's fifth goal of the season proved to be the difference in the Midlands and post-match Kompany discussed the result, the peformnance, Tella's goal and moving on to next weekend.

Kompany on the result:

“I’m very pleased, almost the script of this game was ideal. We played well, really well, it was a great performance I think it was as solid as you can get, and we scored a good goal.

“Then you get back into the routine of your leading and I was hoping that we could finish the game off a bit earlier. Then the script was perfect, I could see that we got things right from the Stoke game. We defended deep when we needed to, were aggressive, pressing the ball, winning headers. You know if you’re in the habit of leading and we need to get through it more and more and then you get better at it, and this is a good reference point for us.”

Kompany on his team:

“The lads always battle; I think that’s why everybody really can get behind this team. The rest for us, we could have had four or five points more but in the end it’s a part of our journey, we need to learn, we need to keep improving, and it’s a team that deserves people to get behind.”

Kompany on Tella goal:

“He’s scoring different types of goals, the runs in behind, he’s got tap ins. He was a player I liked and followed for a long time.”

Kompany on the Beyer substitution:

“We had three yellow cards by half time, and we know we can rely on not just Jordan and Taylor but on Charlie and everybody else so this game could have been completely different if we went down to ten men.”

Kompany on the fans:

“The staff and the players keep talking about it as well, it’s not something that is taken for granted, to have that kind of support. You don’t always get the result in football, you have to accept that, but if you put in a performance, if you work hard, then I think that’s what we have to look forward to this season and the guys are really trying to do that.”

Kompany on a week before Swansea:

“It gives us time off the pitch, with each other, with our families to rest and then prepare again. If we want to keep winning, there’s a relentlessness to the side that’s needed.”
