Burnley manager Vincent Kompany was content with where his side are at following Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with Hull City at Turf Moor.
The boss spoke post-match to the media, discussing the first four games of the campaign, earning respect and goalscorer Jay Rodriguez.
Kompany on where his side are at:
“If I had to say all the things that I would’ve expected in the beginning of having a very new team which is gelling together, I couldn’t commend enough just how hard my team are working. They’re always pressing hard and fighting for second balls.
“It’s a physical league, but we’re up there, and I’m taking a lot of joy in watching them work together. The end product is the harder part of the game, and in our position, it’s going to depend on the amount of chances that we create.
“There were enough today, but we have to have as many as we can to make sure that we get past teams. If you keep creating chances, it’ll come. There’s more goals in this team.”
Kompany on being the better side:
“We’ve played four games so far and I’m saying that over the four games, how many times would you have liked to have been on the opposition team? None of my players will have wanted to, I’m sure.
“We’ll grow consistency and it’ll come for us. Unless you’ve got someone pulling rabbits out of hats, volume and numbers in the box are how goals happen.
“We had more numbers in the box today than we did against Luton in the first half, and that’s a positive for us.”
Kompany on earning respect:
“Nobody just gives you respect, you have to earn it and you do so with every challenge, having numbers around the ball. It’s part of our identity and I won’t let that change.
“You have to earn possession by making runs in behind and putting teams on the back foot. I’ve been there before where the last piece of the jigsaw just takes a little bit of syncing. We’ve just got to keep at it.”
Kompany on the Sky Bet Championship:
“You don’t get away with any [mistakes], but at the same time you’re letting teams off the hook by missing chances yourselves.
“We’ve all been in the game long enough to know that these things happen, and I’ve looked over all the statistics, you could play in a million different ways [in the Championship], there’s no consistency [in results].
“It’s just the nature of the game and whichever way you decide to play isn’t necessarily why it’s more or less difficult [to win games].
Kompany on Jay Rod:
“He’s brilliant. Everyone knows with Jay Rod that you have to bear with us because we’re managing him.
“He’s a special player with quality on the ball, and from what I’ve seen, he’s really enjoying his game at the minute. It’s like a 22-year-old player watching him drinking everything in that you’re saying.
“It’s easy for me to coach him. We need to keep him fit for as long as we can.”
