First Team Coach reflects on Shrewsbury pre-season draw

First Team Coach Mike Jackson said that Burnley's friendly draw with Shrewsbury 'did what it needed to do' on Saturday afternoon.

Two goals from Marcus Edwards, one of which Jackson described as 'excellent' saw the two sides draw level as the Clarets squad gained valuable pre-season match minutes.

“This stage of pre-season it’s about that now. The players get those minutes in their legs, it’s another game, we played in Portugal against Wolves, so it’s another step. They’ve had a hard week in training, so it’s done what it needed to do today.

“There were some pleasing moments in it. Marcus’ free-kick was excellent.

“I think at this stage of the season you’re not looking too much at that, you’re looking at the fitness, you’re looking at the new lads coming in. Nice to see Loum getting playing. It’s been a good day. We’re disappointed with a couple of goals but that’s just me. I’m in football, you don’t want to lose stupid goals.”

With pre-season well underway and following another extensive week in training Jackson's pleased with where the team are currently.

“We’re in a good place. These first few weeks you’re trying to get a lot of volume into the players so they’re not going into the games fresh, they’re going into it under fatigued and underload. It’s just about managing the players to make sure when we get to the Premier League, to the first game, that we’ve got people available and they’re ready to go.”

With two games simultaneously taking place in Huddersfield and Shropshire, the friendlies saw the squads heavily rotated and plenty of academy youngsters from the U21s and U18s were involved, which as previous U21s Manager Jackson was happy to see.

“It’s good, obviously they’ll learn from that couple of minutes because that’s what football is like in league football. But it’s good, I said to them before the game don’t just sit there, make sure you watch the game and the chance to come on is a great opportunity for you to play a part of the first team set up.”
