Right-back looks ahead to Emirates FA Cup action

January signing Oliver Sonne made his Clarets debut in the Emirates FA Cup Third Round against Reading last month and ahead of this weekend’s fourth round trip to Southampton, he is looking forward to the team getting the opportunity to test themselves against Premier League opposition.

Looking back at the previous round at the Select Car Leasing Stadium, how did he find making his debut?

“I enjoyed it a lot. There’s a lot of things that we do differently to what I’m used to in Denmark at my previous club. But I think for a start it was a good game for me to come into. There are some things I can work on here; they are already trying to develop me as a player, and I love that. Then there’s also things I can contribute with, that I did in Denmark, so I think it’s a fine balance between keep learning and keep coming with the things I already know.”

Growing up in Denmark, whilst the historic prestige of the FA Cup is known worldwide, how familiar was he with the competition?

“Yes, it’s a massive competition. I always watched the games, so it’s an honour for me to play in it especially at a team like Burnley where there’s a good chance for me to get further in the competition and meet some of the top teams and get really good games. For me it was just the vibe of being there and feeling the fans for the very first time, being in a stadium against a Reading team who made it difficult for us at times. It was a nice game to jump into for me at the beginning and hopefully we can continue the journey.”

Whilst they’ve had a challenging time in the Premier League so far this season, Saturday’s opponents have plenty of talent within the squad and Sonne says he and his teammates are prepared for a tough encounter at St Mary’s Stadium.

“It’s a Premier League team who are really, really good. I think for us to compare as we want to be in the Prem next season, that’s the expectation we’ve set for ourselves. It’s a good chance for us to compare ourselves to a Premier League squad.

“We have to go out there and show the same kind of arrogance that we’ve played with, the same calmness on the ball, and take control of the match. It’s a good match for us to compare ourselves, where we are in terms of the level we play at because obviously they’re a Premier League team and we want to be that in the near future.”

Sonne is one of five signings to have joined the Clarets dressing room this window, a dressing room that he says has been incredibly welcoming to the new faces.

“It’s really nice, it’s an easy dressing room to come into, people are very sweet. It’s been nice to fit in.

“The older lads who have been here for quite a while are really easy to chat with. Brownhill as a captain is a really, really good guy at welcoming people and making sure that you don’t need anything. In general, it’s a really nice squad, there’s lots of good lads in there.”
