Sean Dyche was delighted to see Jay Rodriguez’s hard work pay off as he put on a four-goal show against Rochdale in the Carabao Cup.
Rodriguez produced a masterclass of finishing in the second half, scoring a hat-trick inside 12 minutes as the Clarets won 4-1 to reach the fourth round.
With local hero Rodriguez's goal glut coming after Rochdale took the lead, Dyche praised the striker's application.
The manager said: “I am pleased for Jay. He has come back for pre-season really fit and has obviously looked after himself.
“Jay looked really good particularly second half, with his movement and spending more time in the box. So I’m pleased for him.
“His movement was good second half across the front. We know he can head the ball well, could delivery went in as well.
“Strikers need goals and thrive on that, so we want him to react from that and grow from it.
“We have made a reasonable amount of chances this season, but taking them like that gives the whole group belief.”
It wasn’t just Rodriguez who impressed in the final third but also new signing Maxwel Cornet, who made his first start for the club.
The performance from both should give the gaffer healthy competition for places at the top end of the pitch in the coming weeks.
Dyche said: “It was really important to get minutes into his (Cornet’s) legs. The Premier League, with all due respect, is a quicker tempo than that.
“You don’t always have as much possession as we had tonight, but of course he has to adapt to this level.
“Some of his movement for was very good, and he stretched the pitch as well.
“His defensive side still needs work, but he created five or six chances, which is pleasing.”
The Clarets could have panicked after Jake Beesley put their League Two opponents in front just after half-time.
But Burnley took control of the first meeting between the sides since 1993 in a composed manner that pleased Dyche.
“I was really pleased with the calmness from everyone," said Dyche.
“They get a goal, which I think is a foul to be honest, but it doesn’t get given, and they nick a goal out of nothing.
“But we were super calm. And I thought the stadium, so fair play to the fans because we have had a tough start.”
