Goalscorer reflects on important three points

Zian Flemming described it as a 'great feeling' to see his free-kick hit the back of the net to help the Clarets secure a big three points against Bristol City at Turf Moor on Saturday afternoon.

Speaking after the game, the Dutchman said he was frustrated the team didn't net more goals on the day, despite enjoying many chances, but was happy they could clinch the victory against in the in form opposition.

“It couldn’t have been any better apart from we wanted a few more goals. Especially at this stage of the season the most important thing is three points, box it off, onto the next one and keep rolling.”

Flemming's free-kick in the 16th minute made the difference on the day and the goalscorer said he was off celebrating as soon as he saw the flight of the ball.

“It was nice! To be honest sometimes as soon as you hit it you think, oh this is going in and I had that this time because I saw the flight of the ball and I thought that’s in, I think I’d run off already.

“It’s a great feeling. It always feels a bit better to score a goal like this, but on the other hand a goal is a goal, and I would take any tap in as well!”

Bristol City were seven unbeaten coming into the game making them a challenging test and with a 1-0 lead it was a nervier end to the game than the forward would have wished for.

“I think it’s a bit frustrating that we had to come to that point in the end because the game wasn’t really like that, we should have put the game to bed in the first half already and if not then in the second half.

“So, a bit of frustration and disappointment from our side. It shouldn’t have come that far that we had to have a nervy final five or ten minutes. But at the same time that’s what this league brings. We’re going to get tested throughout games especially towards the end of games. We’ve been there before and we know how to dig deep, roll up our sleeves and get a result over the line.”

The win extends Scott Parker's men to a run of 26 games unbeaten now, for the 26-year-old just how impressive is that statistic in a league as unpredictable as the Championship?

“It’s just massive, the fans sing it, and I think they have to. We have to all realise how special that is, especially in a league like this. I think in any league but even more so in the Championship, 26 games unbeaten is more than half a season, which is remarkable really.

“There’s a bit of a mental risk in there that we kind of think that that’s normal but it’s not. These results, staying unbeaten, winning games but also another clean sheet, it’s things we shouldn’t take for granted at all. We need to keep getting them as well.”

Firmly in the business end of the season now, the Clarets face another challenge next weekend when they travel to Coventry City and Flemming is well aware that the squad need to be 'at it' on the road.

“Any game towards the end can be so different. Now for example in Bristol we played against a real good side and Coventry may be similar at least in where they are in the table. But we’re also going to face teams who are lower down the league, or we might face teams who are not playing for anything anymore. That’s why at the end of the season it’s always a bit tricky because the dynamics change and the league table sometimes, well most of the time, doesn’t really reflect what those games are going to bring because of those dynamics.

“It’s one of those where any game anything can happen and we just have to be at it, whether it’s Coventry who are in 5th or 6th place or it might be a team lower down the league, anything can happen.”
