Women’s team winger previews Wolves trip

Aimee Kelly has had a successful few weeks with Burnley Women and will be looking to continue that form when the Clarets take on Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday.

After making her 50th appearance for the Club against Nottingham Forest, the winger found the back of the net in a well-earned victory at West Bromwich Albion.

Kelly then lifted the Lancashire FA Women’s Senior Cup with the Club for the third time, starting and playing 67 minutes of the 4-1 victory over Chorley.

“The goal at West Brom was a nice confidence booster for me, but most importantly it helped the team,” she said.

“We then went into the Chorley game knowing, more than previous years, that it was going to be a tough game and that showed.

“In the first 10 minutes it was back and forth, but once we settled into it we started to play and controlled the game

“I hit the post and the bar, so was a bit unlucky not to score, but I’m glad we got the win.”

Kelly joined Burnley from Women’s Super League side Everton in August 2022 and has made 52 appearances and counting since, scoring 22 goals.

The 23-year-old brought her half century up against Forest at the County Ground in Leyland and, despite the result, the milestone is something she reflects on fondly.

“It was a special moment for me,” Kelly said.

“I’ve been here for three seasons now and I think I’m the longest serving player in the squad!

“I’ve had a couple of injuries during that time but the Club have always been very supportive. It’s like a family here and I wouldn’t want to get the 50 appearances anywhere else.”

Looking ahead to this afternoon’s match, the Clarets travel to Telford 4th in the table, six points behind 2nd-placed Wolves who have played a game more.

When asked how she’s feeling ahead of it, she continued: “I’m excited!

“We’re going into the game confident and hoping to finish the season with as many wins as possible.

“They’re a good, strong team who have done well this season. We know they want to dominate and I think they’ll be very physical and good in the air.

“If we can work them out and be hungrier than them, in addition to taking our chances and being good in both boxes, there’s no reason why we can’t win the game.

“We’ve got a big, talented squad, so if we’ve ever got an injury, someone just as good can step in.

"It’s like that in every position. We challenge each other on the training pitch, and ultimately that’s where you’re fighting for your shirt every week.”

Kick-off at the SEAH Stadium (TF1 2NW), which is the home of AFC Telford United, is 2pm.
