Charlotte Greengrass scored either side of half-time to earn Wolverhampton Wanderers Women a 2-1 victory over Burnley Women on Sunday afternoon.

Captain Jade Richards drew the Clarets level shortly before the interval, but it wasn’t enough to prevent a fifth league defeat of the season.

Following last week’s Lancashire FA Senior Cup win, Interim Head Coach Louise Roberts reverted to a starting XI similar to the one that began our last league match against West Bromwich Albion.

The only change from that side saw Aimee Kelly replace Heidi Logan, meaning Kirstie Levell kept goal and Claudia Walker led the line.

Burnley dominated proceedings in the opening 10 minutes or so, with centre-back Richards twice coming close to connecting with Tilly Wilkes free kicks.

Wolves then hit back with a promising spell of their own and after Beth Merrick curled wide of the right hand post, Amber Hughes ran the length of the pitch on the counter but shot wide.

Levell rushed off her line to smother Anna Morphet’s effort on the half hour, but the hosts took the lead two minutes later when a heavy touch presented the ball to Greengrass to tap home.

The Clarets hit back with 41 on the clock when Louanne Worsey’s corner caused havoc in the Wolves box, leaving Richards the chance to head into the bottom right corner from two yards.

The turnaround was agonisingly close to being complete on the stroke of half-time when Danielle Maxwell played through Walker, but the striker’s one-on-one effort was saved by Bec Thomas.

Two moments in the space of five minutes around the hour mark then potentially changed the course of the match.

When Walker fired the ball across the six yard box, Kelly met it on the stretch but turned it agonisingly wide.

Greengrass then seized on a slack touch in the Burnley midfield to surge forwards and pick out the bottom left corner with a fine finish.

Roberts turned to her bench for the first time in the 69th minute, with Kelly making way for Logan and Rhema Lord-Mears replacing Worsey.

From there Burnley rallied and after Lord-Mears had a shot blocked, Laura Elford replaced Walker.

Our last rolls of the dice saw Maxwell and Louise McDaniel make way for Charley Docherty and Amelia Hazard and the Clarets continued to push forward right the way into stoppage-time.

They were unable to work Thomas though, and the referee called time on a positive display that ultimately ended in defeat.

With three Northern Premier Division of the Women’s National League matches to play Burnley sit 4th with 40 points.
