Tony Philliskirk’s U18s were victorious in the Third Round of the FA Youth Cup, beating Norwich City 7-6 in a penalty shootout after a 2-2 draw come the end of 120 minutes of match action.
Joe Westley had given the Young Clarets the lead on 34 minutes before the visitors levelled through defender Waylon Renecke. Level at 1-1 after 90 minutes, the tie went into extra time in which the Canaries went ahead from the penalty spot as Finley Welch converted.
Substitute Lucas Wane though evened things up with five minutes left to play, and it ended 2-2 to ensure the evening would go the distance.
Into the shootout, returning goalkeeper Charlie Casper then saved two penalties and scored one himself as Burnley progressed to set up a tie at home against Sheffield United or West Ham United.

Casper, who had been out injured for the last two and a half months, was one of four changes to the side from defeat at Millwall last time out. Joe Bauress, Brad Grant & 15-year-old Vernon Masara were the other three to come in.
First Half
Philliskirk’s side started the better were almost in front within the first five minutes as full-back Grant’s in-swinging corner cannoned off the crossbar. At the other end, almost instantly, attacking midfielder Dubem Eze then broke through and Casper was on hand to deny him at close range.
The next clear-cut chance fell the way of Burnley who saw shots blocked from Ryan Tioffo & Bauress in quick succession, while Nathan James headed a corner over the bar.

And after captain Westley had a shot held, he put the Young Clarets ahead just after the half-hour mark, firing home from Masara’s cut back in the area after the winger raced onto a long ball from Casper.
The shot stopper denied Eze oncemore, while Masara passed up a big chance to double Burnley’s advantage before the break with the last kick of the opening 45 minutes from point-blank range, firing wide.
Second Half
The Young Clarets started the second half as well as they ended the first, with Bauress – who made his first team debut last month against Crawley Town in the Carabao Cup – surging forward before narrowly seeing his effort fly over the bar.

It would though be Norwich who struck next, levelling things up with Renecke’s header prior the hour-mark from a quickly taken free-kick which caught Burnley out.
The visitors almost found themselves in front on 67 minutes when forward Kenneth Aboh did well to spin his marker and run through on goal, but Casper again came out on top one-on-one.
Casper would go on to pull off a double save, denying Aboh and Reindorf at the rebound, before Tioffo dragged a shot straight at Leon Giller in the Canaries net in what was the last chance prior to an extra 30 minutes.
Extra Time
Defender James had the first chance come the restart, glancing Bauress’ corner wide. Aboh then went through oncemore and in his only personal battle with Casper, it was the Clarets ‘keeper that came out on top this time around with yet another fantastic save to tip round the post.
Moments before the interval though, Norwich were awarded a penalty after captain Welch was adjudged to have been fouled. He stepped up and slotted the spot kick into the bottom corner to give the visitors the advantage, and that’s how it remained until the 115th minute.

Just when hope was beginning to fade, the Young Clarets hit back with substitutes combining in Rohan Vaughan & goalscorer Wane. The former rolled his man and set the ball into the path of the winger who fired home from the edge of the box to make it 2-2.
It remained that way after five minutes of time added on, and the sides headed into a penalty shootout.
Penalties
With Norwich going first, Casper kept out Welch’s effort. Five penalties were then exchanged successfully before Alex Matos skied his strike for the visitors leaving the scoreline at 3-2 to Burnley with Philliskirk’s side needing to score one of their final two.
Sandwiched by Renecke’s successful effort though, both James & Vaughan struck the crossbar meaning the shootout headed into sudden death at 3-3.

Six more penalties headed into the back of the net, including one from Casper himself, before the ‘keeper then denied Toby Chilvers from 12 yards.
And up stepped Grant to slot home the winner, Burnley 7-6 victors in an 18-long shootout.
Philliskirk’s side will now host either Sheffield United or West Ham United in the New Year in Round Four.
