CJ Egan-Riley felt there were positives to take from the Clarets display against the Baggies in the Sky Bet Championship on Thursday evening, with the Sky Sports Player of the Match keen to take the learnings into Sunday's game at Turf Moor.
“We’re disappointed because I think we were the better team tonight and probably deserve to come away from here with three points. That being said it’s a tough place to come, we know that they’re a team that’s in and around the same place as us in the table. We’ve come here, we’ve not lost the game and come away with a point. So, it could have been worse but of course we wanted the win, we want to win every game. Tonight, we thought we dominated, and we had the better chances, held them to not much, so obviously disappointing not to come away with three points.”
Scott Parker's side did come close, a Lucas Pires effort hit the post and Jaidon Anthony saw his goal disallowed. The defender believes that, with the team creating more chances, three points will come.
“I definitely think that we had the better chances in the game. The header from Jaidon, from what I saw, I don’t think it was a foul. We had a few other chances which is positive because the last few games, as we know as a team, we’ve not been creating those chances, and today we created far more. Of course, we want to put them in the back of the net but that will come and today was more positive in that regard.”
The encounter at The Hawthorns was the 10th league start for the 21-year-old, who was awarded the Player of the Match by Sky Sports. Having spoken of his desire to play more football at Burnley, does he feel that he is growing as a player each game?
“Yes, I’m just taking on the new challenges every week here in the Championship which is new for me, there’s a new challenge and a new lesson. I’m just trying to build every week, keep progressing and getting better and better.
"As a team we’re all working so hard every day, the coaching staff, back-room staff, everyone. I’m just thankful to the manager for putting his trust in me, I hope I’m doing alright.”
After the result at Millwall last weekend and the draw tonight, how important does Egan-Riley feel taking advantage of being back on home turf on Sunday with the fans behind the team is?
“I’m looking forward to it, tonight’s done now. We’ll reflect on the game; we’ll go over it and then from tomorrow we’ll be doing our work for Swansea City. It’ll be great to be back at the Turf in front of the fans and hopefully we can put it right on Sunday.”
