Sean Dyche will be looking to add quality and quantity to his squad this summer to keep the Clarets punching in the Premier League.
Dyche’s men finished the season 17th in the table after Sunday’s closing defeat at Sheffield United.
The Clarets were a comfortable 11 points clear of the relegation places as they secured a sixth successive season of top-flight football at Turf Moor.
But Dyche knows his squad – which finished the campaign with three successive defeats from goalless performances – needs strengthening to increase competition for places and his options when key men are missing.
The Burnley boss said: “To try and find the right players who fit into our bracket isn’t easy.
“I don’t think there will be a radical shift, but I’d like to think we’d be able to spend more than last summer. It does need strength in depth though, without a doubt.
“There’s still the basis of a side here who can compete. We have to layer it up, though, because we do need reinforcements and a deeper squad.”
The Clarets were comfortably the lowest spenders in the Premier League last summer in bringing in just two players in midfielder Dale Stephens and goalkeeper Will Norris.
There has since been a change of ownership at Turf Moor and Dyche will be looking for the support required to add what he feels is necessary to keep his side competing among the elite.
“I think the new ownership are suggesting there will be some money available,” he added.
“I don’t know how much we will need. That’s another challenge, and they (transfer targets) still have to fit our financial model, so it’s not an easy task.
“But hopefully there will be that little bit more stretch, as I call it, to challenge this group going forwards.”
