Sean Dyche praised ‘a solid performance’ following Burnley’s narrow Carabao Cup fourth-round defeat against Tottenham and believes a change in the Clarets’ fortunes is just around the corner.
Lucas Moura’s deflected second-half header separated the sides at Turf Moor and Spurs held on to progress despite being put under siege by the hosts late on.
Ashley Barnes saw a low shot saved and debutant Connor Roberts’ long throws caused problems but the Clarets were ultimately unable to find a way through, which left Dyche again reflecting on a promising performance which didn’t yield the outcome it perhaps merited.
“It was certainly a solid performance,” he said.
“Tottenham are a good side and I’m pleased with the mentality to take the game on.
“We can’t find the rub of the green, to be honest. Their goal comes from a deflection from our defender trying to get a block on it – we can’t find one of those moments, which would be helpful.
“We made a lot of changes tonight but there were some really good performances and they’re all knocking on the door.
“It’s hard to fault them at the minute. We’ve changed the system a bit, changed the players. There are a lot of things they are doing right, so we have to maintain that.
“There was plenty of belief in the performance tonight and we have to make sure we take the chances and find the clinical moments.”
Burnley’s best chance of a first half short of clear-cut opportunities came from a teasing Johann Berg Gudmundsson cross which was turned over his own crossbar by Emerson Royal.
The hosts were indebted to a superb Nick Pope save to keep the game level on 65 minutes, the goalkeeper standing tall to deny Giovani Lo Celso, and he was at it again to keep out goalscorer Moura after the deadlock had been broken.
Dyche pinpointed the England international’s performance as one of several standout individual displays as the squad continue to provide selection headaches.
“There were lots of good things,” he said.
“Popey [Nick Pope] is right back on it, they were two big saves – from our mistakes, it must be said. He’s a top goalkeeper getting back to real sharpness.
“Dwight [McNeil] is looking sharp again, Connor [Roberts] has done great tonight in his first runout and physically he’s done well.
“The attitude is correct, the belief in what we’re trying to do is correct, we just have to find those moments. I keep saying it but that’s the reality of it, as a lot of the performance is right.”
The Clarets boss was also full of praise for the Turf Moor faithful, who did their utmost to inspire an equaliser as Burnley piled on the pressure late on.
“The fans were terrific and stayed behind the team,” he said.
“In the last 10-15 minutes we were on the offensive and trying different ways to open things up.
“The fans noticed that and they will be important for us as well. It’s about the team, of course, but the fans can play their part too and they were brilliant tonight.”
