Burnley’s Carabao Cup progress was ended at the fourth-round stage as Lucas Moura’s header earned Tottenham a narrow win at Turf Moor.
The Brazilian international converted compatriot Emerson Royal’s cross midway through the second half to settle a tight contest which saw chances hard to come by.
The Clarets applied plenty of late pressure in search of a response but couldn’t force a way through as Spurs held on to advance to the last eight.
Sean Dyche made six changes from the side which drew 2-2 with Southampton in the
Premier League on Saturday, bringing in summer signing Connor Roberts for his Clarets debut.
The backline Roberts was part of were tested for the first time four minutes in as Giovani Lo Celso released Harry Kane, only for the England captain to see his left-footed shot fly wide of the target from a tight angle inside the area.
Steven Bergwijn’s through ball was gathered by Nick Pope when Kane looked to get in behind once more and it was the home side’s turn to threaten on 13 minutes, with Johann Berg Gudmundsson’s dangerous in-swinging cross from the right-hand side turned over his own crossbar by Emerson Royal.
The resulting corner was cleared as far as Josh Brownhill, who fired over from 30 yards, and Spurs later cleared another Clarets opportunity from a set-piece after Matej Vydra had been wrestled to the floor on the left.
Visiting boss Nuno Espirito Santo was forced into a 25th-minute change which would later prove crucial, Moura replacing the injured Bryan Gil, and the Brazilian winger was brought down in a promising position five minutes later.
But the Clarets wall stood firm to block Lo Celso’s free-kick as clear-cut chances remained at a premium, with Roberts then making a vital interception from Moura’s pass to keep the visitors at bay.
There was still time for an off-balance Kane to volley over the bar when a corner found its way to the striker in the last meaningful action of a half which ended goalless.
The second period began at a livelier pace and saw half-chances created at both ends. Ben Davies’ cross was just too far in front of Kane before a fine Burnley move saw Erik Pieters’ deep cross headed back across goal to Jay Rodriguez, who was penalised for handball in his attempts to control.
Dyche shuffled his pack on the hour mark, introducing Chris Wood and Ashley Barnes for Vydra and Rodriguez, but it was Tottenham who next went close as Nick Pope stood tall to deny Lo Celso after the midfielder had been played through on goal.
And the deadlock was broken three minutes later as Emerson’s cross found Moura, who headed into the ground and past a diving Pope to give the visitors the lead.
The goalscorer soon came close to a second, Pope diving to his right to keep out a stinging effort, and Dyche responded by freshening up his own wingers as Maxwel Cornet and Aaron Lennon were brought on for the final 15 minutes.
Roberts’ long throws were proving a dangerous weapon and Barnes saw a penalty appeal turned down from one such set piece following a tussle in the box as the Clarets continued to go in search of an equaliser.
Barnes was in the thick of the action once more with five minutes to play, firing a low shot which was kept out by Pierlugi Gollini, and Cornet then saw a cross cleared by
Davinson Sanchez after being released down the left.
The best chance of the closing stages fell to Pieters but the left-back couldn’t keep his 20-yard effort down after a corner was only half-cleared.
The Clarets’ attentions now turn back to Premier League action, with the visit of Brentford next up on Saturday.
