Defender Connor Roberts on last night's Carabao Cup defeat

Clarets debutant Connor Roberts was delighted to complete his first 90 minutes since the European Championships in Wednesday’s clash with Tottenham and hopes to continue staking his claim at right-back.

Roberts signed from Swansea in the summer but has had to be patient in waiting for his Burnley bow due to injury.

Handed an opportunity by Sean Dyche in the fourth-round Carabao Cup tie, which went Spurs’ way courtesy of Lucas Moura’s second-half header, Roberts was solid defensively and caused problems at the other end with his dangerous long throws.

The Wales international now wants to build on a promising debut and push for further appearances in front of the Turf Moor faithful.

“It has been a while coming,” he said. “It’s my first 90 minutes since the Euros against Denmark.

“It’s nice to get back out there but a shame we couldn’t get a positive result

“We limited them to few chances but in the first half we could have looked after the ball a bit better.

“In the second half we got a few crosses in, a few long throws but it just didn’t fall for us.

“There are positives to take from it but we need to improve in the final third and try and stick a few in the back of the net.

“It’s not a given you’ll walk into any Premier League team and Lowts [Matt Lowton] has been playing well.

“It’s down to me to keep training well and try and offer something a bit different when I get my chance.”

Roberts admitted it was an ‘emotional decision’ to leave his boyhood team for the Clarets in pre-season but the presence of Wales teammate Wayne Hennessey has helped him settle in.

Next month will see the full-back look to help his country towards the 2022 World Cup but his immediate focus is on Burnley as he continues to make his mark.

“Coming here is a completely different challenge,” he said.

“I’ve enjoyed it, all the lads are great and I obviously know Wayne from Wales.

“I just want to get involved as much as I can. I’ve been on the bench in the Premier League and played tonight so hopefully I can get chances to impress and get more minutes in my legs.”
