Charley Docherty says she and her Burnley teammates are looking forward to returning to league action this weekend, but whatever the competition their aim is simply to win games of football.

By the time this one comes around it will have been 10 weeks since the Clarets’ last match in the Northern Premier Division of the Women’s National League.

That was at Hull City’s Easy Buy Stadium on Sunday 17th November and Rebecca Sawiuk’s side were 2-0 winners thanks to goals from Brenna McPartlan and Claudia Walker.

Since then Burnley have played four matches in various cup competitions and, with a mini festive fixture break to boot, the group are looking forward to playing for three points again.

“The girls don’t really switch from cup to league in terms of mindset,” Docherty said.

“The idea is that we always want to be winning games, dominating teams, scoring goals and playing our football.

“All things considered it’s tight at the top end of the table and it’s obvious that promotion is our goal.

“I think we’re in a better place now than we were in December to look towards that and really push on in the second half of the season.”

The Clarets come into this one on the back of a comfortable 5-0 victory over AFC Fylde in the Lancashire FA Women’s Senior Cup last weekend.

Having come off the bench in extra-time of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup defeat to Nottingham Forest the week prior, Docherty started and played the 90 at Kellamergh Park.

Reflecting on the victory, the 21-year-old continued: “I really enjoyed the game!

“It’s always nice to have those cup games to get everybody back up and running and we were able to put a different team out, try different things and perhaps play a bit more freely to what we would do in the league.

“We put some patterns together that we’ve been looking at ahead of the second half of the season too.”

Burnley came out on top when these two teams faced off back in August with McPartlan, Emma Siddall and Laura Elford all netting in the second half after the Glassgirls took the lead.

That was the team’s second game of the season following the 9-0 thrashing of Hull City on the opening day.

“It wasn’t a good start to the game but we showed a lot of resilience,” Docherty reflected.

“I think that was our first real challenge as it was one of our first games and was our first away trip.

“We were a pretty new squad and faced some struggles with our defending and finishing on the day.

“It was good how we stayed together, though, and ultimately pulled through for the three points.

“It will be different this time around in that we’re at home and we know what we’re expecting from them.

“I always like playing at Leyland because it’s very homely and comfortable for us to be there.

“The girls know what to expect from the pitch and it’s nice to be able to see and interact with the fans who are there to support us, because they’re so close to the pitch.”

Burnley season ticket holders can claim free entry by presenting their season card at the gate on Sunday afternoon.

Other adults are priced at £5, while concessions are £2. Free parking is available on a first-come-first-served basis.
