21/09/2019 – Burnley 2 - 0 Norwich City (Turf Moor)

In a first meeting between the two sides in the top-flight since 1976, the Clarets came out on top thanks to Chris Wood's quick-fire double that set the hosts on their way at Turf Moor.

Wood capitalised on a slow start from the Canaries, as the striker met Ashley Westwood's front-post corner to head home the opener in the 10th minute.

Then just four minutes later, Wood steered in Dwight McNeil's cross into the roof of the net to double Burnley's lead and then two early goals proved to be enough to secure the victory.

Norwich did start brightly in the opening few minutes on a sunny afternoon in Lancashire, as in-form striker Teemu Pukki had a run at goal, but could only see his effort from inside the area denied by the legs of Nick Pope.

But just two minutes after that chance, the Clarets were ahead as an unmarked Wood met Westwood's perfect in-swinging corner to nod home into the back of the net from close range.

The New Zealand forward was then celebrating his second just a few minutes after that, as the hosts expertly exposed an error within the Canaries' defence.

Jack Cork intercepted Ibrahim Amadou's pass, before releasing the ball to McNeil down the left, with the winger nipping past Sam Byram and crossing to the near-post with Wood there again to guide it first time past Tim Krul.

Burnley were well and truly on the front foot and could have had a third shortly after, but Ashley Barnes' back-post goal bound volley was blocked by the legs of Byram.

However, just before the break, the hosts were given a scare as Moritz Leitner crashed a shot against the woodwork, before seeing the danger cleared away.

With the game just reaching the hour mark, the Clarets created the chance for a third goal, but Barnes curled an effort just over the target, after linking-up with Wood.

There was time for another Wood chance when his strike was palmed away by Krul, before Barnes looked to be brought down inside the area by Ben Godfrey, but no penalty was given.

The third goal wouldn’t come, but the well deserved three points remained at Turf Moor.
