Burnley FC and its official charity Burnley FC in the Community are pleased to announce that Burnley has been chosen to host one of 70 FA Girls’ Emerging Talent Centres, supported by the Premier League, with the aim to provide better accessibility and more inclusivity for young female players and enhance player development. The programme is designed to be a central hub for female players from Burnley and the surrounding areas.
Burnley FC has dedicated significant interest and investment in developing women’s football, with the women’s first team benefiting from increased facilities and infrastructure. The recent success of the Lionesses at the Women’s Euros in the summer has also catapulted the female game into the spotlight, with more girls than ever before being encouraged to take up the sport. Meanwhile, Burnley FC in the Community deliver a football and education programme for girls aged 16+ to combine their studies with playing football.
The purpose of Emerging Talent Centres are to provide girls, aged 8-16 years, with greater accessibility to the player pathway and a wider and more diverse talent pool for the game. Underpinned by key areas including more focused investment and inclusivity, the centres offer young female players two hours contact time per week, sports therapy clinics, education workshops and a bespoke games programme.
Nationally, funding from the Premier League across the next three years will see the number of female players aged 8-16 engaged in FA programmes across the country more than double from 1,722 to over 4,200 by the end of the 2023/24 season.
Kay Cossington, the FA’s Head of Women’s Technical added: "The women’s game has so much potential for growth and working with the Premier League and their experience of developing talent and delivering community programmes is hugely exciting. Through the FA Emerging Talent Centres, we will engage 2,500 more girls in the next three years.”
Funding for the Emerging Talent Centres is on top of investment in the Premier League Primary Stars programme which sees the League fund 105 professional football clubs across the pyramid to deliver free school sports sessions to 5–11-year-olds.
Burnley FC Chairman, Alan Pace said: “As a football club we have been open about our passion and commitment to growing the women’s game. The operations and development of Burnley FC Women and ensuring girls enjoy the sport is a key area of focus for us.
“It’s incredibly positive to see the Premier League investing in this area and I’m thrilled that through the allocation to Burnley, young girls in Lancashire can benefit from the Emerging Talent Centre and develop into players of the future.”
Chief Executive Officer of Burnley FC in the Community, Sara Ward said: “We are absolutely delighted to have been awarded one of the 70 Emerging Talent Centre licences.
“As an organisation, we are extremely proud to be part of this programme to increase girls’ participation in football within Burnley and the surrounding areas. We look forward to working collaboratively with local grassroots clubs to support the growth of the female game.”
Trials for Burnley’s Emerging Talent Centre are scheduled to take place on Thursday 27th October and Thursday 3rd November at Shuttleworth College, Padiham, BB12 8ST.
