Welcome to Turf Moor for this afternoon’s game against Manchester City. It’s my pleasure to extend a warm welcome to Pep Guardiola, the players, staff, directors, and supporters joining us today.
It’s been a month since our last home fixture, so it’s wonderful to be back at Turf Moor for today’s visit from the Premier League champions.
At today’s game, we will proudly be supporting World Autism Acceptance Week and raising vital funds for the National Autistic Society. In addition to the players warming up in the charity’s branded t-shirts, the match worn shirts will be auctioned off after the game, with proceeds donated to the organisation’s important work - increasing public understanding of autism and creating a society that works for autistic people and their families. Our Esports team are also getting involved in the campaign by holding a 60-hour marathon streaming challenge on Twitch.
The National Autistic Society is close to our hearts here at Burnley FC and we’re pleased to play our part to get people talking and finding out more about autism.
This month, we were saddened to hear of the passing of former Claret Andy Lochhead. The centre forward, who made more than 200 appearances for the Club, scored over 100 goals and famously four against Manchester United on Boxing Day 1963. Everyone at the Club sends their condolences to Andy’s family and friends at this sad time. During the break, several of our first team players were on international duty. It’s a great honour to be called up for your country, and a huge congratulations must go to Wayne Hennessey, as he won his 100th cap for Wales last Tuesday night, an incredible achievement. I want to also congratulate Nick Pope, Connor Roberts, Wout Weghorst, Nathan Collins and Maxwel Cornet for their inclusion in their respective countries’ squads.
Last week, Burnley FC Women were crowned winners of the Lancashire FA Women’s Challenge Cup trophy following a thrilling 4-1 victory over AFC Fylde. It was a fantastic occasion at the County Ground in Leyland, and I want to congratulate the squad on the achievement. Women’s football at the Club is continuing to go from strength to strength and I’m sure more trophies will follow! As we return to Premier League action, I want to take this opportunity to thank you, the fans for your support.
We have 11 games to go this season and while there may be 11 players on the pitch during the game, we’re calling on you to be the twelfth man and get behind the team. The games ahead present a massive opportunity for us to kick-on and your support will make all the difference.
Finally, congratulations to Brad Colston and Josh Blunden who competed in the ePremier League 2021/2022 Grand Finals in London last weekend. The pair reached round five of the tournament, a valiant effort, and now turn their attention to the FIFAe Club World Cup qualifiers later this month.
With not long to go until kick-off, as ever, thank you for your continued support. Let’s get behind Sean and the team this afternoon.
Up the Clarets!
Alan
