The Clarets travel to St James’ Park tonight for their Carabao Cup second-round tie. Newcastle United against Burnley is an all-Premier League contest.
If the sides cannot be separated after ninety minutes the tie will be decided on penalties.
The draw for the third round will be made after the televised West Brom/Arsenal tie.
Last season Burnley went out in the third round to eventual winners Manchester City. Pep Guardiola’s side won 3-0 at Turf Moor.
Steve Bruce’s Newcastle United went out in the quarter-final losing 1-0 away to Brentford last December.
It’s seven years since the Magpies beat a Premier League team in the competition. Alan Pardew’s side shocked holders Manchester City 2-0 at the Etihad with goals from Rolando Aarons and Moussa Sissoko.
Burnley beat Sheffield United on penalties after a 1-1 draw last season.
Manager Sean Dyche has suggested he might make changes.
He said: "We want to field a team that can win, it's likely that there will be some changes and some players getting minutes that haven't yet."
Dyche also suggested some of Burnley’s youngsters may be involved.
"They will be around it. It's a big ask to throw them into Premier League games, but they get a real feel of it being on the bench and being around the group,” added the Burnley boss,
Team news
Ashley Westwood (toe) and Matej Vydra (knock) missed Burnley’s 2-0 defeat at Liverpool on Saturday. They will be assessed before the tie.
Kevin Long and Dale Stephens remain unavailable through injury.
Sean Dyche is likely to make changes, with summer signing Nathan Collins among those possibly in the frame for a taste of the action.
For the hosts, Slovakian international Martin Dubravka was injured in Euro 2020 and is likely to be out of the side for another eight weeks. Fellow keeper Karl Darlow is still recovering from Covid.
Defender Paul Dummett and midfielder Jonjo Shelvey both missed the defeat at Villa Park with calf injuries. Youngster Elliot Anderson has been suffering with a hip problem.
Isaac Hayden went off with a knee injury at half-time on Saturday.
Jeff Hendrick may play against his former team. The Republic of Ireland international played 139 games for the Clarets, scoring 10 goals.
Form guide
Burnley’s last away win came in May in a crucial 2-0 success at Craven Cottage.
These two sides faced each other in a pre-season friendly at Turf Moor earlier this month. Burnley won the game 1-0 with Jay Rodriguez getting the only goal.
Like Burnley, Newcastle United have lost their first two Premier League games. West Ham United won 4-2 at St James’ Park on the opening day and ex-Claret Danny Ings was among the scorers as Aston Villa beat the Magpies 2-0 on Saturday.
United’s last home win came against already relegated Sheffield United back in May. New signing Joe Willock got the only goal.
Opposition camp
It is the third time in five years that Newcastle have lost their opening two Premier League matches. They entertain Southampton ahead of the international break on Saturday.
Steve Bruce has indicated he will utilise his squad against the Clarets.
The Newcastle boss said: “It’s a cup competition! People are desperate to play. I’ve got 12/13 players not playing every week. Yes, I’ll make changes, but it will be a strong team and squad.
"We will take the cup seriously, like I always have done since I have been here.”
Bruce added: "That’s why we carry a squad the way we do now and we’ll see changes up and down the country because it’s an ideal opportunity to get some minutes into your squad by playing competitive football and also put a marker down to play on Saturday.”
