The Club, in collaboration with Lancashire County Council, are aware of concerns that have been raised regarding the proposed matchday traffic order around Turf Moor Stadium on matchday.

We can provide the following update and wish to clarify that this is not a proposal to introduce widespread new road closures.

Matchday traffic restrictions have operated around Turf Moor for many years to help manage traffic and pedestrian safety during football matches. The majority of the roads included in the proposed order are already subject to these arrangements.

The main purpose of the new order is to update how the existing closures are activated. Historically, this has been undertaken by the police. However, alternative arrangements are now required, and the new order would allow agreed personnel at Turf Moor to activate the restrictions, when necessary, on matchdays.

The proposal also includes a small number of additional road sections which have, in practice, already been closed on matchdays for the last two years. Their inclusion would formalise existing traffic management arrangements rather than introduce a significant new change.

Matt Townsend, Director for Highways and Transport at Lancashire County Council, said: "This is not a proposal to introduce widespread new road closures around Turf Moor.

"Matchday traffic restrictions have been operating in the area for many years, and the majority of the roads included in the proposed order are already subject to those arrangements.

"For many years, Lancashire Constabulary has assisted with implementing these restrictions on matchdays. As the police will no longer routinely undertake this role, an alternative arrangement is required to ensure the continued safe and effective management of traffic and pedestrians on matchdays.

"The proposal would update how existing restrictions are activated and formalise a small number of road sections which have already been closed on matchdays in practice.

"We are carefully considering all consultation responses before any decision is made."

Jon Bullas, Head of Safety and Security at Burnley FC added: “As a Club, we always consult with the emergency services, including the police, ahead of every game that road closures are in place, to seek their agreement. We also review the impact of the closures every quarter, at the Safety Advisory Group chaired by Lancashire County Council and attended by all key partners.

“The safety of supporters attending matches at Turf Moor is the priority for everyone involved, and we are committed to minimising disruption for local residents and businesses.”
