Josh Brownhill and Jack Cork joined Burnley FC in the Community and Stand Out Socks at Holly Grove Primary School this week ahead of World Down Syndrome Day later this month.
Co-founded by Josh’s cousins Ross & Christian Stand Out Socks have teamed up with Burnley FC in the Community to collaborate on a pair of socks which were launched at community’s partner school Holly Grove Primary, who take part in the charity’s Limitless Clarets programme.
Burnley FC in the Community’s Limitless Clarets programme provides sports sessions for young people who have Special Educational Needs/Impairments or Disabilities and all proceeds from sales of the socks, which are available to purchase from the club shop, will go directly towards supporting the programme.
Lewis Hickie Youth Engagement Manager at Burnley FC in the Community said: “Stand Out Socks and Burnley FC in the Community came together just before Christmas. We hosted a competition for young people, as part of our Limitless Clarets provision to design their own socks. The socks have now been created and they’ll be going on sale for Burnley v Brentford on Saturday.

“All the profits from those socks will support our Limitless Clarets provision in providing a Down Syndrome specific session for young people within the community.
“The players have a huge impact so to have them get involved in the launch is great.”
Deputy Head Teacher at Holly Grove Primary Eve Taylor said the children thoroughly enjoyed the visit.
“It’s been absolutely amazing, the children loved it. It’s been great to see the response from the children and it was great to see the response from the players as well. I think there’s been some new friendships formed today!
“To tie in with Science Week, the children asked them who was better at making a paper plane, so we also had a paper plane competition.
“A lot of our children struggle to find the opportunities to access sport, clubs and out of school provision so Burnley FC in the Community work really hard with us. They come in once a week and they do sports activities with our children. Many of our children access the after-school clubs that they provide and we’re also in the process of setting up a holiday club as well in collaboration with Limitless Clarets.”
A cause close to his heart, Josh Brownhill spoke of the importance of the work Stand Out Socks are doing and of raising awareness ahead of World Down Syndrome Day later this month.

“It’s coming up to World Down Syndrome Day and it’s about spreading awareness for people with Down Syndrome. It’s always a great cause. Ross and Christian are part of my family as well and what they’ve been doing has been incredible really.
“If everybody can take a look and show their support because what the two of them are doing, and there’s more than just two of them there’s a big team. And what they’re doing for people with Down Syndrome is huge and helping them in their life as well. A lot of respect and support goes to them.”
Fellow teammate Jack Cork added: “I think the children were excited! I think our answers weren’t too boring so it’s nice. It’s nice to see how things work here and how much work the staff put into places like this. It’s been a really nice thing to do and see. The kids have been smiling and happy, so it’s been good.”
Christian Laing, Co-founder of Stand Out Socks spoke about how positive the collaboration with Burnley FC in the Community has been.
“Today we’ve been round Holly Grove Primary School and met some of the children which has been amazing. And we’ve been showcasing our new socks collaboration with Burnley FC in the Community.
“The socks were designed by two people who go to the community project which is really good. They go on sale in the shop on Saturday and all profits are going back into the Limitless Clarets programme which is amazing. To get more people with Down Syndrome into football because Ross struggled when he was younger. There was nowhere really for him to go and play football. So, what we’re trying to do is help more people with Down Syndrome, to find a place for them to go and play football.”
