Late Norwich comeback sees Clarets defeated in East Anglia

Two late goals from hosts Norwich City saw Burnley fall to a 2-1 defeat at the Lotus Training Centre on Friday night in Premier League 2, Division 2 action.

Joe McGlynn had put the Clarets in front midway through the first half, but Abu Kamara levelled from the penalty spot before scoring the winner deep into time added on.

Having made their second-longest trip of the league season, Michael Jackson’s side started the quicker and had the ball in the back of the net early on as Ne-Jai Tucker’s cross into the area was headed in by McGlynn, but the ball was adjudged to have gone out of play before the winger swung it into the box.

Clarets goalkeeper Sam Waller had to react well to keep out an effort from Norwich’s Flynn Clarke as he volleyed at goal from inside the area, and soon after Burnley got the opener through the same duo of Tucker & McGlynn.

Winger Tucker drilled the ball low across the six-yard box this time around, and striker McGlynn was on hand to convert for his third goal of the campaign with two of those coming against the Canaries.

Mark Helm also tried his luck from distance, testing Norwich ‘keeper Dylan Berry with a free-kick before Clarke again went close for the hosts and hit the outside of the post.

A goal to the good at the break, the Clarets came within inches of a second moments after the restart as Tucker took aim and saw a strike from the edge of the area hit the woodwork with Berry well-beaten.

Following this effort though, chances came at a premium for Burnley as the hosts pushed for an equaliser and applied frequent pressure on the Clarets’ backline which had stood firm until the 80th minute.

A late challenge in the box presented Norwich with the chance to level things up from 12 yards out and frontman Kamara did so to put the Canaries in the ascendancy.

Tony Springett proved a livewire for the hosts in the latter stages, bringing a save out of Waller before firing over the bar with an open net to aim at following a defensive error.

No board was held up by the fourth official to confirm the amount of added time, but as the clock ticked into the 94th minute, Norwich got the winner through Kamara with Springett providing the assist.

A first defeat for Jackson’s team since November leaves them sixth in the PL2, Division 2 table.

The Clarets have had their scheduled Premier League Cup group stage game away at Peterborough on Monday – January 24 – postponed, so will now return to action next Friday, January 28.

Sheffield United are the opponents in the same competition and the Blades will make the trip to the County Ground in Leyland for a 7PM kick-off.
