Anass Zaroury's 94th minute winner at Turf Moor handed Burnley a third consecutive win and extended the Clarets' unbeaten run in the Sky Bet Championship to 15 matches.
Tom Ince, son of manager Paul, gave the Royals the lead 10 minutes into the second half, before substitute Benson grabbed the Clarets’ equaliser, just minutes after being introduced.
Benson then teed up the winning goal in added time, picking out Zaroury to head home from close range.
Vincent Kompany made two changes from the side that beat Norwich City 1-0 on Tuesday night, as Connor Roberts replaced Vitinho at right-back, with Samuel Bastien coming into midfield for the suspended Jack Cork.
First Half
The first opportunity of the game fell to Roberts in the 6th minute, as Anass Zaroury picked out the Welshman at the back post with an excellent cross, but the defender’s header sailed just wide of Joe Lumley’s goal.
Burnley enjoyed the majority of the ball throughout the opening half an hour, but chances were limited by the Reading defence.
Striker Jay Rodriguez was fed a through ball into the area from Bastien, but the forward’s effort fizzed wide of the target.
Rodriguez was then gifted another chance minutes before the break, as Nathan Tella broke into the area and cut the ball back to the unmarked Burnley no.9, who could only fire well over the bar.
Despite a dominant first half from Kompany’s men, the two sides headed into the break goalless.

Second Half
The Clarets then started the second 45 on the front foot, as Zaroury broke down the left and squared the ball into the box, only to be cleared away from danger.
But it was the visitors who took the lead just 10 minutes into the second half, as Ince latched onto Meite’s flick on and fired home low past Muric.
Kompany then turned to his bench and introduced the duo of Vitinho and Manuel Benson on the hour, as the hosts looked for a way back into it, with Roberts and Gudmundsson making way.
And Benson, for the third match running, made an impact from the bench. This time the Belgian winger fired home on the volley from just outside the area, leaving Lumley stranded in the Royals goal and pulling the scores back level.
And with seven added minutes, Burnley found their winner. Benson weaved into the box and picked out Zaroury at the back post, who turned the ball home past Lumley.
