Burnley booked their place in the Carabao Cup third round with a 1-0 victory at Shrewsbury Town on Tuesday night, as Samuel Bastien's second half effort proved to be the difference between the two sides at the Montgomery Waters Meadow Stadium.
Vincent Kompany made eight changes from the side that faced Blackpool on the weekend at Turf Moor, handing a debut to CJ Egan-riley and a first start of the season for Bailey Peacock-Farrell, Johann Berg Gudmundsson, Matt Lowton and Darko Churlinov, who came on for his debut against the Seasiders on Saturday.
First Half
The hosts started bright under the Shropshire floodlights, as defender Matthew Pennington saw his effort from inside the area pushed wide for a corner from Peacock-Farrell.
Josh Cullen then tested Shrews goalkeeper Marko Marosi, as his long-range strike from outside the area curled just wide of the post.
Kompany’s men then came close again moments later, as Manuel Benson cut inside the area and saw his goal-bound effort deflect wide for a corner.
And the Clarets then carved open another opportunity, as Lowton picked out Gudmundsson inside the box with a delightful cross, with the Iceland winger lifting the ball just over the crossbar.
Second Half
Nathan Tella was introduced at the break for the visitors, with Gudmundsson making way, completing a successful 45 minutes on return from injury.
And just five minutes into the second half, the away side had the dream start, as the ball fell nicely to Bastien unmarked outside the six-yard box, with the Congolese midfielder firing home past Marosi for the opener.
As the hosts searched for a way back into the tie, Josh Brownhill replaced Churlinov on the hour mark for the Clarets.
With clock ticking and entering the final 10 minutes in Shrewsbury, Cotterill's side did find the net with a looping header from defender Chey Dunkley, only to be flagged offside.
Despite Town's best efforts at clawing a goal back, Kompany's defence stood strong to keep the home side at bay and secure their place in the next round of the competition.
