Vincent Kompany is glad that his side have progressed in the Carabao Cup, sealing a place in the draw for the Third Round of the competition with a 1-0 win at Shrewsbury Town.
Samuel Bastien struck the only goal of the game just after the restart, and Burnley chief Kompany spoke to the media post-match about the game, utilising his squad, & looking forward to the next round.
Kompany on the win:
“I thought in the beginning they [Shrewsbury] were pressing a bit more, and then we forced them back. It was just about us staying calm and patient from there, working our way through the lines.
“It took us a while to get to grips with it but then when we did, we got the goal. That’s something we’ve got to get used to and got to get good at.
“When you make so many changes, I’m left wondering the same as everybody else – what it’s going to give us and how we can try and find some balance. I was at least happy that we had no injuries, and the running levels were good again from the guys.
“The energy levels were good throughout, and I thought the clean sheet was a real testimony of how a few young guys in there held their own, which is important. You’re going to see more of that, so it was good to see how they dealt with the long balls and the second balls. There was good signs. “
Kompany on Darko Churlinov’s full Clarets debut:
“Number one, we try and look for players with intensity because without that, you get exposed. Number two, you want to get players who are going to feel comfortable in these situations.
“We saw a couple moments [tonight] where he was running between the lines and driving at them. Soon, the other lads in the team will understand his game and he’ll understand theirs. I’m massive on the rate of improvement, and in our team that’s a positive sign.”
Kompany on utilising his squad with players switching positions:
“[Vitinho] has played in that position [left-back] many times before. You can either go gung-ho and get competition in for each position continually spending, or you get a few players who can move about.
“Vitinho is one of them, [Darko] Churlinov is one of them, and we still have quality. Vitinho has shown that on the right wing, at right back and at left back. For us, that makes a difference. It’s better for us to use our resources.”
Kompany on progression in the cup:
“It just allows us to look forward to another round. God knows who we’ll face, but I’m sure that the players and fans will be looking forward to it [whoever we get].
“These cup games allow us to see the full extent of the squad, and the more we have the better.”
