Fan favourite Barnes first arrived at Turf Moor on an initial three-and-a-half-year deal in January 2014. After nine and a half successful years in Lancashire the striker departed as a free agent in the summer of 2023, before returning 18 months later in January 2025 on a contract that runs until the end of the 2024/25 season. The 35-year-old began his career at his local club Paulton Rovers before moving into the Football League with Plymouth Argyle. After initially joining Brighton & Hove Albion on loan he became a permanent Seagull in 2010, totalling 53 goals in 170 appearances for the Seagulls before making the move to Turf Moor. Barnes had an immediate impact in his first spell at Burnley scoring the first goal in a 2-0 win over Wigan Athletic at Turf Moor that guaranteed promotion to the Premier League and earned him the Goal of the Season award. The striker then endured two injury hit campaigns, with a late winner against Crystal Palace in November 2016 being his first goal in over 20 months. From there he was able to push on and the 2017/18 season was a major success for Barnes as the striker hit double figures, with nine goals in the Premier League helping the Clarets to their best league finish for 44 years. Barnes went on to enjoy his best year yet in a Burnley shirt in 2018/19, recording his highest Premier League goals tally of 12. The forward started the 2019/20 season in flying form with four goals in his first three games and signed a new contract in November 2019. Unfortunately though, a hernia problem bought his campaign to a close on New Year's Day. Injuries also limited his game time in 2020/21 but the striker still weighed in with a couple more vital goals, including a famous winner from the penalty spot against Liverpool which brought Burnley their first win at Anfield since 1974 and ended the champions' 68-match unbeaten home league run. 2022/23 saw Barnes total eight goals in 45 appearances across all competitions as the Clarets were promoted under Vincent Kompany. At the end of the campaign, though, it was announced that the Clarets stalwart was leaving at the end of his contract and the striker later joined Norwich City. A fairly successful debut season in Norfolk saw him play regularly under manager David Wagner and provide 11 league goal contributions - six goals and five assists. However, after finding his playing time limited at the start of 2024/25, it was announced in January that Barnes was heading back up north for an initial short-term period and will wear the number 35 shirt. His second Clarets debut came in January's 3-1 Emirates FA Cup third round victory at Reading.
