Quartet meet children and distribute tickets

Last week, a group of women’s team players teamed up with Burnley FC in the Community to surprise children at two local primary schools.

Naoisha McAloon and Dee Bradley visited St John’s Read Primary School and Danielle Maxwell and Louise McDaniel took a trip to Ightenhill Primary School, both of which are part of the Premier League Primary Stars programme.

At both schools, BFCitC’s Education Manager Lianne Bradford led an inspiring assembly on the importance of women’s football and equal opportunities, before introducing the players to the pupils.

The students quickly rallied behind the players, becoming their newest and biggest fans.

The players then joined a group of budding young footballers, many already part of Burnley FC Women’s Juniors, before heading out onto the pitch to play matches and practice their best penalties.

The players generously gifted 30 complimentary tickets to the women’s team game against Derby County at Turf Moor to each primary school.

Furthermore, a select number of students were invited to join them on the Clarets Carpet ahead of the fixture too.

Reflecting on her visit, Dee Bradley said: “It was very wholesome, and I enjoyed every minute of it!

“It was great to meet the kids and there was one girl who played for Burnley U12s who bought along a g group of her friends to the game on Sunday too.

“Some of them told us that they’d never kicked a football in their life, and left it saying they might try to now. Being able to encourage them is what it’s all about.”

Year 6 teacher Jade from St John Read shared her gratitude: “Thank you so much for choosing to come to Read School.

“The children had such a fantastic morning, and all the children and staff have said how inspiring the assembly was and what a great opportunity it was to meet the players and ask their questions.

“All the girls were inspired by the visit, even those who normally shy away from sport. It was lovely that the boys could get autographs and speak to the players too, and you’ve definitely made the year of some lifelong Burnley fans!”

Education Manager Lianne Bradford added: “Every season we invite the women’s players into our local primary schools, and each year the visits become even more inspiring.

“We’re seeing more and more young female footballers coming through, which shows the powerful impact women’s football is having on girls.

“The chance to train with and speak to the players is only strengthening that journey.”
