Burnley FC Women were victorious when they travelled to the Stafflex Arena to face Huddersfield Town in FA Women’s National League action, winning 2-1.
The Clarets took the lead on 18 minutes, as Lara Miller netted her second goal since joining the Club earlier this season, and Evie Priestley added a second just before the half hour mark.
The home side grabbed a late consolation through Yasmin Mason but the Clarets had already done enough to secure the three points.
Jay Bradford made two changes to the side that lost to Nottingham Forest last Sunday – 2nd April – as Leah Embley dropped out for Courtney Willis and Emma Taylor returned from the start to replace Dom Cooper.
First Half
After a slow start to the game, the Clarets struck the opening goal 18 minutes in as Willis whipped a corner towards the near the post and Miller got there first to nod in past Terriers ‘keeper Abi Megeary.
Miller than fired a strike wide mere minutes after, before Priestley picked up a stray kick from Megeary but could only shoot wide past the onrushing stopper.
Priestley wouldn’t make the same mistake twice however, as she latched onto a long ball upfield which was flicked on by Sarah Greenhalgh and capitalised on a mix up between Megeary and her defender to slot into an empty net.
The hosts then had a chance as Beth Ibbotson drove forward and teed up Brittany Sanderson, who fired over the bar in what proved to be the last action of the opening 45.
Second Half
The Clarets started the second half the quicker of the two teams, as Priestley was denied by a last-ditch block, before Willis’ low rebound was tipped wide by Megeary.
Greenhalgh then did well to race onto a through ball and beat her marker before squaring the ball to Priestley who could only shoot straight at Megeary.
In a game that mainly involved Burnley chances, the hosts did pull a huge save out of Lucy Farrell, as Laura Hume shot low from point-blank range but was denied well by the Clarets stopper.
The returning Taylor drove forward and laid off for Millie Ravening, who struck narrowly over from distance and substitute Amaya Coleman-Evans then shot wide from a similar range.
The hosts scored a late consolation, as Yasmin Mason tapped a header back across goal into an empty net in what proved to be the last action of the game.
The Claret Women are back in action this Sunday – 9th April – when they travel to Emerys Stadium to face Stoke City in FA Women’s National League North action.
