Burnley FC Women were held to a goalless draw for the first time this season, taking a point from their trip to Huddersfield Town Women on Thursday night (April 14).
Though unable to get three points, the Clarets continued their impressive run of just one defeat in all competitions since the turn of the calendar year.
Only one change was made to the Burnley side from last Sunday’s 6-2 win away at Loughborough Lightning Women. Midfielder Lizzy Hamer recovered from her illness and returned to the starting 11 as Lucia Molinari dropped to the bench.
Welsh goalkeeper Lucy Farrell also re-joined the squad and started as a substitute having been away on international duty recently, playing for her nation against Iceland in the U19 EURO Qualifiers.
Brittany Sanderson was included in the starting line up for the Terriers meanwhile after netting a brace in their victory over Hull City Ladies last time out.
First Half
Both sides struggled to gain the upper hand throughout in what was a scrappy affair, and it took 13 minutes for the first real effort with Nic Worthington seeing Huddersfield ‘keeper Bethan Davies off her line but unable to guide an effort on target.
Less than 60 seconds later, Burnley shot stopper and captain Lauren Bracewell then pulled off an impressive save at the other end to deny Kate Mallin.
Glen Preston’s Terriers thought they’d scored midway through the first half with the Clarets struggling to clear a corner, but Bracewell clung onto the ball with the officials confirming she’d done enough to keep it out.
And before the opening 45 minutes came to an end, both striker Evie Priestley and midfielder Worthington also tried their luck with strikes at goal, though Davies saved comfortably on both occasions.
Second Half
Burnley started the better at the restart and saw Courtney Willis’ low shot at goal saved well by Davies while Priestley then hit an effort wide of the mark on 61 minutes.
Soon after, Huddersfield’s Sanderson really ought to have opened the scoring as she flicked on from a matter of yards out following a corner, but the ball rattled the crossbar before the Clarets cleared away.
Burnley’s Worthington and Willis came close with shots of their own before ‘keeper Bracewell pulled off another superb stop on 78 minutes to deny Sanderson who was clean through on goal.
The last chance of note came on 83 minutes with Molinari – fresh off the bench – inches away from connecting with Priestley’s low cross to score with her first touch of the evening.
It wasn’t to be for either side though, with each taking a well-deserved point.
Burnley FC Women next return to action on Sunday, April 24, away at West Bromwich Albion Women in a 2:00pm kick-off.
